Position Overview:

The Manual Machinist is responsible for producing high-quality precision components using manual machining equipment to support both research and development (R&D) initiatives and ongoing production needs. This role plays a critical part in prototype development, process improvement, and supplying the production floor with accurate, reliable parts that meet engineering specifications and quality standards.

Manual Machining & Fabrication

  • Operate manual machines including lathes, mills, grinders, and drill presses to fabricate precision components.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and CAD models to produce parts within tight tolerances.
  • Select appropriate tooling, materials, and machining methods based on part requirements.
  • Perform setups, adjustments, and tool changes to ensure efficient and accurate machining.

R&D Support

  • Collaborate with engineering on prototype development, design modifications, and testing.
  • Assist in building and refining new product components and assemblies.
  • Provide feedback on manufacturability and design improvements.
  • Support rapid prototyping efforts with quick turnaround and high attention to detail.

Production Support

  • Manufacture and supply precision parts to maintain production schedules.
  • Work closely with production teams to prioritize and fulfill machining needs.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve part or process issues impacting production.
  • Maintain consistency and repeatability in part manufacturing.

Quality Control

  • Inspect finished parts using precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, gauges).
  • Ensure all components meet specifications, tolerances, and quality standards.
  • Document measurements and maintain records as required.
  • Identify and report defects or deviations promptly.

Maintenance & Safety

  • Maintain machines, tools, and work area in clean and safe condition.
  • Perform routine machine maintenance and report repair needs.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including OSHA and company policies.
  • Ensure proper handling and storage of materials and equipment.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or certification preferred.
  • 3–5+ years of experience operating manual machining equipment.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Experience working with tight tolerances and precision parts.
  • Familiarity with a variety of metals and materials.
  • Basic understanding of CNC machining is a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and mechanical aptitude.

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and work on the production floor.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs occasionally.
  • Manual dexterity to operate machinery and precision tools.
  • Ability to safely operate machinery and tools.

Work Environment:

  • Exposure to noise, moving mechanical parts, and industrial materials.
  • Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
