Position Summary:
Performs infant developmental assessments, physical therapy assessment, developmental feeding assessments, orthopedic splinting; makes recommendations for interventions and provides appropriate treatments for neonates in the NICU and Newborn Nurseries. Provides counseling and education to parents regarding their infant’s developmental status and family adaptation to children with disabilities. Determines appropriate developmental follow-up services following hospital discharge and makes referrals to these agencies. Provides developmental and physical therapy assessment for former NICU patients age 6-36 months in the NICU Follow Up Clinic.
II. Major Responsibilities:
Assesses developmental, neuromotor and feeding concerns of infants who are premature, neurologically compromised, drug exposed or have genetic or other disorders which poses a risk to developmental outcome. Provides appropriate therapeutic intervention. Consults to and assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of initiatives by the NICU Development Team. Functions as a resource and consultant to the staff in the implementation and integration of developmental care. Participates in discharge planning and makes appropriate developmental follow-up referrals. Provides parent education and counseling concerning understanding their infant’s developmental status and enhancing the infant’s developmental outcome. Maintains ongoing communication with neonatology staff, pediatricians and Early Intervention programs concerning infant’s developmental status and concerns. Provides clinical and classroom teaching about developmental care of neonates, infants and toddlers for UMass Medical School residents. Develops and provides in-service education for members of the staff and health care team. Coordinates and/or participates in developmental-related research studies.

III. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
Master’s Degree and current licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy.
Experience/Skills:
Required:
Five+ years’ experience in infant and child development, assessment and therapeutic intervention. Research experience. Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
Occupational Therapist available for 4 shifts per month including a minimum of one weekend shift per month.
