What You’ll Do

As a Patient Financial Counselor, you are responsible for assisting patients in the process of completing financial assistance applications, educating them about their financial responsibility, and helping them identify a path toward resolving their balances. This position also acts as a liaison between customer service and the patient answering billing questions as they arise. This position involves communicating with patients in person, over the telephone and via written communication requiring the highest level of customer service.

Patient Financial Counselor Job Responsibilities:

  • Pre-screen uninsured and underinsured patients for financial assistance opportunities.
  • Identify patients needing Medicare Beneficiary Notices of Non-Coverage or other waiver signatures.
  • Follow up with patients not financially cleared prior to discharge to assess financial needs.
  • Provide personalized estimates of financial responsibility based on insurance or eligibility for government programs.
  • Assist uninsured patients with enrollment in Medicare, Medicaid, and other state assistance programs.
  • Document all payer communications, pre-service financial discussions, collection attempts, and payment plans.
  • Ensure financial assistance applications are complete before submission for review.
  • Collaborate with social workers or eligibility vendors to maximize Medicaid applications.
  • Evaluate patient qualification for financial assistance and collect required documents.
  • Calculate patient financial responsibility according to Beacon Health System policy.
  • Initiate collections on payment plans or discounted services/fees.
  • Help patients develop plans to resolve liabilities, including setting up payment plans.
  • Educate patients on insurance coverage, billing statements, and financial responsibilities.
  • Stay informed on statutes and regulations affecting receivables and collections.
  • Complete daily administrative tasks, including filing, processing paperwork, and documenting patient interviews.
  • Collect and process payments pre- and post-service; prepare cash deposits for bank pickup.
  • Perform additional assignments and special projects to maintain competence and support department effectiveness.

What You Bring

As a Patient Financial Counselor, you will demonstrate technical knowledge of UB04 and CMS1500 claim forms, 837i/837p requirements, and their application for third-party billing, as well as expertise in government agency and third-party payer policies, procedures, regulations, and requirements. You will possess strong organizational skills to manage and control both automated and manual claim submissions. You will maintain a high level of customer service and professionalism in all interactions and is highly comfortable working with computers and technology, including Microsoft Office and other software programs.

Required Qualifications

  • The knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a High School Diploma.
  • An advanced degree is preferred.
  • Previous experience in customer service or a related field is preferred.
  • General knowledge of insurance.
