Nature & Outdoor Recreation Facilitator (Part-Time Position)
As the Nature & Outdoor Recreation Facilitator, you will support year-round programming through a blend of visitor services, interpretive programming, animal care, and group team facilitation.

Summary of the Position: The Nature & Outdoor Recreation Facilitator supports year-round programming through a blend of visitor services, interpretive programming, animal care, and group team facilitation. This position is primarily based at the Prairie Oak Nature Center, which operates seven (7) days per week and also supports facilitated group programs at the City’s Ironwoods Challenge Course, Ironwoods Cabins and other facilities in Ironwoods Park.
- Primarily daytime hours, including weekdays and weekends, with occasional evening and weekend program coverage.
- Average of 10-20 hours a week
- Peak Season (March - October)
- Off-Season (November – February)
Your work responsibilities may include:
- Provide engaging, high-quality customer service and environmental interpretation to visitors at the Prairie Oak Nature Center. Responsible for educating visitors on the Center’s exhibits of live animals, aquariums, flora, fauna, and natural history collections through informal interpretation and structured programming.
- Support the day-to-day operations of the Prairie Oak Nature Center, Cabin rentals, and Challenge Course. Duties may include completing registrations, handling inquiries received via email and phone, tracking attendance, starting and extinguishing a campfire, and documentation, including attendance, consent forms, and emergency information, for programs and facility use.
- Facilitate educational and outdoor recreational programs for a variety of ages and group types based on the program curriculum as designed by the Department. Facilitation of the programming may occur at the Ironwoods Challenge Course, Nature Center, Ironwoods Cabins, other facilities in Ironwoods Park and surrounding parks.
- Responsible for following all safety procedures and protocols at the Nature Center, Cabins, Carolina T-Wall, Alpine Tower, Caribbean Ropes Course, and low ropes to ensure the safety of all participants.
- Assist with daily care of the animals housed at the Center. Responsibilities may include animal care, such as feeding, exhibit cleaning, and enrichment activities.
- Assist with the cleanliness and maintenance of Prairie Oak Nature Center, Cabins and Challenge Course. Responsibilities may include cleaning of the educational exhibits, displays, and programming spaces, cleaning of Cabins and the Challenge Course.
Minimum Requirements: Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Must be at least 18 years of age or older. Minimum of one (1) year of experience working in a customer service based position and a minimum of one (1) year of experience working with children of all ages. Experience in outdoor education, teaching, or animal care preferred. Experience in climbing or belaying, preferred. Must be able to be trained in climbing and belaying. Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record per the City’s drivers Use of Vehicles for City Business policy throughout employment with the City.
