Description:

Position Summary:

The Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) performs comprehensive sleep studies and related diagnostic procedures to aid physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. This position is responsible for conducting polysomnography testing, monitoring patients throughout sleep studies, performing PAP titrations, and providing patient education regarding sleep disorder treatment. The RST ensures all testing complies with ACHC accreditation standards, HIPAA regulations, and AdaptHealth quality standards while delivering exceptional patient-centered care.

Essential Functions and Job Responsibilities:

Patient Care and Sleep Study Administration

  • Perform comprehensive polysomnography studies including diagnostic sleep studies, CPAP/BiPAP titrations, split-night studies, MSLT (Multiple Sleep Latency Test), and MWT (Maintenance of Wakefulness Test)
  • Prepare patients for sleep studies by explaining procedures, obtaining informed consent, and addressing patient questions and concerns
  • Apply electrodes and sensors according to standardized protocols for monitoring brain activity, eye movements, muscle activity, heart rhythm, respiratory effort, airflow, and oxygen saturation
  • Monitor patients continuously throughout sleep studies via audio and video surveillance, ensuring patient safety and comfort
  • Document patient behaviors, sleep patterns, and physiological responses throughout the study
  • Respond appropriately to patient needs and emergencies during testing procedures

Technical Operations and Equipment Management

  • Operate, calibrate, and troubleshoot polysomnographic equipment and related monitoring devices
  • Perform PAP equipment setup, mask fitting, and pressure titration to optimize therapy effectiveness
  • Ensure proper functioning of all recording devices, electrodes, sensors, and related equipment
  • Conduct regular equipment maintenance and quality control checks
  • Document equipment issues and coordinate with appropriate technical support for repairs

Data Analysis and Documentation

  • Score and analyze polysomnographic data according to current AASM (American Academy of Sleep Medicine) scoring guidelines
  • Prepare accurate and comprehensive sleep study reports for physician interpretation
  • Maintain detailed, accurate patient records in compliance with HIPAA regulations and organizational policies
  • Document all test results, equipment settings, and patient interactions in the electronic medical record system

Patient Education and Therapy Support

  • Educate patients regarding sleep disorders, sleep hygiene, and treatment options
  • Provide instruction on proper use and care of PAP equipment and supplies
  • Address patient concerns regarding PAP therapy compliance and troubleshoot common issues
  • Coordinate with respiratory therapists and DME staff to ensure continuity of care

Compliance and Quality Assurance

  • Maintain current RST certification through continuing education requirements
  • Adhere to all ACHC accreditation standards, Medicare/Medicaid regulations, and HIPAA privacy requirements
  • Participate in quality assurance initiatives and performance improvement activities
  • Follow infection control protocols and universal precautions
  • Complete required competency assessments and training programs
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and protected health information security

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain organized work area and ensure adequate inventory of supplies
  • Complete all required documentation within established timeframes
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and departmental initiatives
  • Collaborate with physicians, referring providers, and clinical team members
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with AdaptHealth’s Compliance Program and complete required training.
  • Maintain current knowledge of HME products, services, and insurance guidelines.
  • Flexibility to work outside standard business hours as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Competency, Skills and Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of sleep disorders, polysomnographic techniques, and sleep medicine principles
  • Proficiency with polysomnographic equipment and sleep study software systems
  • Strong understanding of AASM scoring guidelines and sleep stage identification
  • Ability to recognize and respond to cardiac arrhythmias and respiratory abnormalities during sleep studies
  • Excellent patient care and communication skills with ability to work effectively with diverse patient populations
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate documentation
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records and computer systems
  • Understanding of HIPAA regulations and patient privacy requirements
Requirements:

Education and Experience Requirements:

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required, associate’s degree in polysomnographic technology or related healthcare field preferred
  • Completion of an approved polysomnographic technology education program OR equivalent clinical training

Licensure/Certification:

  • Current RPSGT (Registered Polysomnographic Technologist) credential from the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) or RST (Registered Sleep Technologist) or CCSH (Certified Clinical Sleep Health) credential required
  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required

Experience:

  • RST (Registered Sleep Technologist) or CCSH (Certified Clinical Sleep Health) credential
  • Two or more years of experience in sleep medicine
  • Experience with pediatric sleep studies
  • Bilingual English/Spanish communication skills
  • Experience with home sleep apnea testing (HSAT)

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Sleep laboratory setting with exposure to patients with various medical conditions
  • Exposure to bodily fluids and potential infectious materials
  • Low-light environment during overnight monitoring
  • Requires mental alertness and the ability to communicate with empathy and professionalism.
  • Work environment may be stressful at times, as overall office activities and work levels fluctuate
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, stretch, stand, and sit for extended periods of time
  • Subject to long periods of sitting and exposure to computer screen
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions of wrists, hands, and/or fingers due to extensive computer use
  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds as needed
  • Excellent ability to communicate both verbally and in writing
  • May be exposed to angry or irate customers or patients
