About This Position
The Junior Counselor is a near-peer supervisory role within the Washington Montessori School Summer Camp. Junior Counselors work alongside experienced counselors and head counselors to support the safety, engagement, and well-being of campers in their assigned division. This is an excellent opportunity for young people to develop leadership, teamwork, and childcare skills in a values-driven, experiential learning environment.
Responsibilities:
- Provide appropriate, positive, near-peer supervision of children assigned by the Camp Director or head counselor.
- Take program instruction from the Counselors and head counselors for your assigned division.
- Report injuries and accidents in a timely manner to the Camp Director, First Aid Director, or the appropriate head counselor.
- Arrive each morning at the assigned time, prepared and ready to support the day’s programming.
- Assist the head counselor in creating and maintaining a prepared environment for your assigned program division.
- Perform other supervisory, programmatic, administrative, and maintenance duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- An understanding of positive discipline techniques.
- Familiarity with Office of Early Childhood directives and regulations applicable to your assigned camp division.
- A basic understanding of Montessori principles and practices.
- Familiarity with common camp activities — such as sports, arts and crafts, and outdoor skills — is a plus.
- Group and classroom management skills.
- Basic First Aid and CPR certification (training provided and required by the camp).
- Aquatic supervision skills.
- Coaching and sports facilitation.
- Ability to work and collaborate effectively as part of a team of professionals.
- Ability to remain calm, patient, and flexible in a busy and sometimes unpredictable environment.
- Ability to maintain a positive attitude and high energy level throughout the camp day.
- Reliable transportation to and from the camp each morning and afternoon assigned to work.
- Physical ability to participate in active games and outdoor activities, including standing, walking, running, and lifting light equipment.
Working Conditions:
This is a seasonal, part-time position. Work is performed primarily outdoors and in program spaces on the WMS campus. Junior Counselors are expected to be present and engaged for the full duration of each assigned shift (Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–3:30 PM) during the camp session. The role involves active physical participation and direct supervision of children in a dynamic, outdoor camp environment.
