About This Position

Description:

The Director of Safety, Security and Transportation is responsible for leading Blake’s safety and security program on both Blake campuses, helping ensure the safety and security of our community members and property and promoting a warm and welcoming environment. The director owns Blake’s emergency management, threat assessment and training and works closely with Blake’s leadership team to mitigate risks and promote Blake’s safety culture. The director oversees a team of seven security officers.

This role also leads Blake’s school bus transportation department, which includes a fleet of 24 school buses, providing safe and reliable transportation to and from school and to athletic events. The director oversees two supervisors, all bus drivers and a mechanic.

Requirements:

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Safety and Security

  • Team Leadership: Leads a team of seven Blake security officers. Communicates effectively with teachers, parents and students to promote Blake’s safety culture.
  • Blake’s Security Program: Develops and implements safety and security policies and procedures, including Blake’s emergency management plan. Conducts incident investigations as necessary. Promotes a strong partnership with local law enforcement, fire department and other emergency response agencies.
  • Community Training & Drills: Oversees ALICE and other training for employees, students, parents and other users of Blake facilities in matters pertaining to safety and security. Coordinates and supervises all emergency preparedness procedures, including fire, severe weather and lock-in drills.
  • Technology: Works with Directors of Buildings and Grounds and Information Support Services to upgrade and maintain Blake’s security infrastructure (e.g. cameras, PA system, access control and alarm systems).
  • Financial: Oversees annual security budget and recommends security-related projects that improve the safety and security of community members and property.
  • Operations: Conducts investigations as needed. Shares on-call responsibilities with the security supervisor for responding to after-hour and/or weekend security issues. Coordinates special safety and security needs associated with functions and activities taking place on campus.

Transportation

  • Team Leadership: Oversees a department of 25 people including transportation supervisors, bus mechanic and bus drivers. Oversees driver hiring, qualification and training processes to ensure a professional and engaged workforce dedicated to the safe transport of students.
  • Financial Planning/Analysis: Oversees a $1.5m transportation budget.
  • Marketing: Leads marketing efforts to maximize family participation in the bus program. Oversees production of the annual transportation plan including all forms, services and rate structures.
  • Operations: Maintains an active knowledge of regulatory compliance changes associated with Minnesota school bus operations. Manages the partnership with public school districts and provides dispatcher services as needed. Oversees assessing road conditions and making recommendations to the Head of School about potential school delays or closings due to inclement weather. Ensures superior performance of vendors responsible for charter trips, bus maintenance and fueling services.

Experience and Skills

Minimum Qualifications:

Required:

  • College degree plus extensive law enforcement or security related experience
  • 7+ years of progressively responsible work experience in safety and security management
  • 5+ years of work experience leading teams
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral)

Preferred:

  • Prior law enforcement experience
  • 3+ years of progressively responsible work experience in transportation or logistics
  • Work experience in a school or other nonprofit setting

Salary Range: $142,000 to $157,000

This salary range includes the expected annual salary for this position. In making a salary determination, we consider professional experience, applicable qualifications and other job-related factors. Based on these factors, a candidate's salary offer could exceed this range.
