About This Position

Position Title: Mgr, Environmental Audit Programs

Location: Des Moines, IA, United States

Description:
Lead and coordinate the independent auditing compliance of holding company/business platform operations with environmental regulations, laws and permit requirements to ensure environmental RESPECT and regulatory integrity.

Monitors and tracks closure of audit findings.

Recommends and coordinates training activities to proactively ensure compliance with environmental requirements.

Essential function and a key part of the internal controls required to fulfill the environmental portions of financial disclosure and reporting obligations.

Identify potential or actual areas of non-compliance through personal on-site inspections and/or coordination of contractors. Prepare accurate and concise reports on the inspection findings along with recommendations for corrective action to management.

Mitigate potential civil and criminal liability associated with environmental noncompliance by ensuring that all audit findings are addressed and corrected in a timely fashion.

Maintain expert knowledge of requirements imposed by government agencies through extensive research and analysis of the statutes, regulations, licenses and permits.

Consult with other members of the environmental services function.

Maintain a strong working knowledge on the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and how they impact each operating unit.

Lead Environmental Auditors

Responsibilities:
Coordinates with environmental professionals throughout the operating groups who are tasked with assuring environmental compliance for Berkshire Hathaway Energy.

Responsible for development and execution of the Berkshire Hathaway Energy environmental audit program to ensure that facilities are in compliance with environmental regulations and permitting requirements. Responsible for coordination of and incorporation of corrective measures into business unit operations so that compliance is maintained. (30-60%)

Promptly advises senior management of findings of noncompliance. Summarizes and reports all audits findings to senior management. Responsible for tracking all findings to closure and facilitating efforts to ensure that all noncompliance items are corrected in a timely fashion. (15-30%)

Performs complex environmental work requiring considerable exercise of independent analysis and judgment in environmental services. Exhibits leadership in anticipating and addressing environmental issues. Manages environmental activities of consulting firms. (15-30%)

Maintains a working knowledge of environmental issues for all environmental media. Maintains a specialized knowledge and expertise in air, water or waste issues and utilizes such knowledge in day-to-day functions. (10-15%)

Performs administrative activities necessary for the effective management of the department, including employee safety, selection and development of employees, salary administration, budget administration, employee counseling and motivation, organization goals and objectives and planning, organizing, integrating, measuring and reporting the work performed within the department. (0-5%)

Performs additional responsibilities as requested or assigned. (0-5%)

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering, environmental sciences or the physical sciences is required. (Typically, four years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.)

Advanced recognition as an environmental auditor or certified environmental professional a plus.

A minimum of eight years of experience in environmental work is required, with a minimum of five years demonstrated air, water or waste/land use experience is required. A broad diversity of environmental work experience in private industry, governmental and consulting is preferred.

An advanced knowledge of environmental laws and regulations, with the demonstrated ability to analyze complex regulations and determine applicability based on an understanding of the facility operations.

Effective analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills. Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents such as business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and governmental regulations.

Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, the general public and employees at all levels.

Effective interpersonal skills and leadership abilities.

Must possess the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with business unit personnel, government agencies, trade groups and other industries.

Ability to define obscure and incomplete problems; collects data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

Ability to conceptualize and develop creative alternatives to problem resolution.

Ability to deal with abstract and concrete concepts.

Computer skills including competency with spreadsheets, word processors, presentation tools, etc. or a demonstrated ability to learn such skills.

Significant travel will be required in this position, with approximately one-half of the individual's work performed outside the primary reporting location.
