Director HIM Inpatient Coding

This leadership role is responsible for overseeing the strategic, operational, and financial performance of inpatient hospital coding across a large, integrated healthcare system. The position plays a critical role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of health information management practices while driving efficiency and continuous improvement. You will lead large coding teams and vendor-supported services, ensuring high-quality inpatient coding operations aligned with regulatory standards and organizational goals. The role also involves close collaboration with clinical, IT, and administrative stakeholders to optimize health information systems and workflows. You will be accountable for advancing data-driven decision-making, improving coding accuracy, and supporting enterprise-wide HIM transformation initiatives. This is a high-impact leadership position within a complex, regulated healthcare environment focused on quality, compliance, and operational excellence.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead and oversee inpatient and acute care hospital coding operations, providing strategic direction and ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Manage, coach, and develop HIM coding teams and vendor partners, fostering performance excellence and accountability.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations including HIPAA and other healthcare privacy and data standards.
  • Maintain data integrity and coding accuracy while implementing quality control measures and documentation standards.
  • Optimize use of HIM systems and technologies, including coding tools, EMRs, and data management platforms.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve coding quality and turnaround times.
  • Collaborate with clinical, IT, finance, and administrative teams to ensure seamless integration of HIM workflows.
  • Develop and manage departmental budgets and resource allocation aligned with strategic priorities.
  • Oversee vendor relationships, ensuring performance, compliance, and operational effectiveness.
  • Lead training, development, and change management initiatives to strengthen team capability and engagement.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management or a related healthcare field from an accredited institution.
  • AHIMA certification required (RHIA or RHIT).
  • 7–10+ years of progressive HIM or coding experience, including leadership roles in large healthcare organizations.
  • Strong expertise in inpatient coding (ICD-10 CM and ICD-10 PCS) and DRG classification systems.
  • Experience managing large teams in a complex, matrixed healthcare environment.
  • Strong knowledge of EMR systems, coding technologies, and data management tools.
  • Familiarity with computer-assisted coding (CAC), encoder systems, and AI-driven HIM solutions preferred.
  • Strong leadership, change management, and team development skills.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder engagement abilities.
  • Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and process improvement capabilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and drive organizational change effectively.
