STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Provides nursing related tasks and functions under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse in charge of the team and/or unit. Assists patients with activities of daily living. Provides a safe, sanitary, orderly, and attractive environment for patients, hospital employees, and visitors.

This is a casual position requires working 16 hours per 6 week schedule. Days of work are Sunday - Saturday with hours varying. Shifts are 7:00am - 3:00pm and 3:00pm - 11:30pm, partial shifts will be an option as needed.

JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Provides personal hygiene measures for patients of all ages that may include bed bath, oral hygiene, combing hair, back care, and dressing patient. Performance of nursing tasks shall consider the age and development of the patient.
  • Provides clean patient environment by changing bed linen, cleaning overbed table and bedside stand, straightening room, and other related tasks as needed.
  • Provides general nursing care such as positioning patients; lifting and turning patients; applying/utilizing special equipment; assisting in use of bedpan, urinal or commode; ambulating the patient; pre operative and post operative care; and application of abdominal binders or anti embolism stockings.
  • Takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, height, blood pressure and intake-output measurements.
  • Prepares patients for meals, serves and removes food trays, and assists with feeding patients. Distributes drinking water and other nourishments to patients.
  • Performs routine treatment procedures including enemas, application of appliances for heat and cold, and sitz baths.
  • Answers patient call lights, anticipates patients' needs, and makes rounds to assigned patients.
  • Assists patients with handling and care of clothing and other personal property (including dentures, glasses, contact lenses, hearing aids, and prosthetic devices) throughout their hospital stay.
  • Performs general care activities for patients in isolation.
  • Assists in preparation of units, patient rooms, and beds for receiving patient admissions, returning surgical patients, transfers, emergencies or discharges.
  • Completes daily activities for swingbed patients as identified in the care plan and when requested by nursing.
  • Provides post-mortem care and assists in transporting bodies to the morgue.
  • Transports patients to and from various departments as requested.
  • Collects and transports specimens to the appropriate departments.
  • Collects linen and disposes of trash to designated areas.
  • Establishes and maintains interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors and other hospital personnel, while assuring confidentiality of patient information.
  • Attends in-service education programs, as assigned, to learn new treatments, procedures, developmental skills, etc.
  • Provide activities for swingbed patients and completes patient interest surveys.
  • Cleans and makes up units of discharged or transferred patient as needed.
  • Cleans work area and equipment at the end of the shift.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION: (CNA/NA)

  1. Preparation and Training - Work requires a professional level of knowledge acquired by completing an accredited RN nursing education program. Candidate must hold RN licensure from the ND board of Nursing for the current year. Preference for a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing. • Family BirthPlace - position requires completion of a basic fetal monitoring course and neonatal resuscitation course. • Patient Care Unit/ICU - position requires completion of a basic cardiac monitoring training and ACLS course.
  2. Work Experience - Minimum of three years of general nursing experience in hospital (health care field). Preference for previous supervisory or management experience. Preference for a minimum one year of staff experience in the individual unit. Knowledge of Joint Commission Standards. Knowledge of administrative nursing practice. Time to reach competency on the job: 3 months to 6 months following orientation to the work area.
  3. Attendance - Punctual and regular attendance is an essential responsibility of each employee at JRMC. Employee are expected to report to work as scheduled, on time and prepared to start working. Employees are also expected to remain at work for their entire work schedule.
  4. Analytical Ability - Demonstrates the ability to collect, interpret, and apply clinical, operational, quality, and financial data to support decision-making and improve unit performance. Analyzes patient volumes, staffing patterns, productivity, quality indicators, patient experience data, and safety trends. Identifies variances, anticipates operational needs, and develops action plans to improve patient outcomes, staff effectiveness, regulatory compliance, and resource utilization.
  5. Independent Judgement - Exercises sound clinical and operational judgment in managing daily unit operations, prioritizing patient care needs, and allocating staff and resources. Demonstrates the ability to make timely decisions in complex or rapidly changing situations while maintaining accountability for outcomes. Seeks guidance appropriately for high-risk or strategic issues while functioning independently within the scope of leadership responsibility.
  6. Contact with Others - Very frequent contacts with patients and visitors. Exchanges information on a factual basis as directed, performing activities with courtesy and tact.
  7. Responsibility for Welfare Others - Responsible for own work. Little or no responsibility for work of others.
  8. Mental / Visual Effort - Has frequent contact with patients and other employees that may result in minor discomfort and delays to others. Carelessness could frequently result in moderate harm to patients, visitors, and co-workers.
  9. Physical and Sensory - Effort Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner. Must demonstrate physical and emotional ability to meet agreed upon work schedule and performance standards required by the position. Required duties are such that concentrated attention must be applied on demand consistent with manual skill requirements in situations that may at times be stressful. Visual acuity necessary for reading charts and working with medical devices; color perception necessary for interpreting testing procedures involving color comparisons.
  10. Supervising the Work of Others - Frequent standing or walking. Lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients and/or equipment. Frequent reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and crouching. Needs finger dexterity when handling equipment and performing nursing related functions, including swingbed activities. Must be able to frequently lift 25 lbs. and occasionally lifts linen bags of 50 lbs. Must be able to assist in the evacuation of patients during disasters.
  11. Working Conditions - I OSHA job classification: This position is defined as a Category I in which the employee does have exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Position requires exposure to patients with infectious disease and odor. Must practice aseptic techniques and observe Standard Precautions. Participates in and complies with JRMC Safety Management program. Position is subject to frequent interruptions. Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances. Work may be on weekends and holidays; beyond normal working hours and/or temporarily in other positions when necessary.

  13. Background Check - A comprehensive background check and drug screening will be conducted as a condition of employment for this role.
  14. Drug Screen - A urine drug screening is required for all positions and must be completed within 30 days of the date of hire.
  15. Physical Requirement - These are physical requirements of the position that may be performed as part of daily duties. Inability to meet one or more of these physical requirements will not automatically disqualify a candidate or employee from the position.
