Roller Operator (Paving) in North Kingstown, Rhode Island at Peckham Industries

Job Summary:

The Roller Operator is responsible for operating compaction equipment to achieve proper density and surface finish during asphalt paving operations. This role is critical to ensuring pavement quality, longevity, and compliance with project specifications by applying the correct rolling patterns, timing, and techniques in coordination with the paving crew.

Essential Functions:

1. Results matter. Achieve required compaction and density targets to ensure pavement strength, durability, and long-term performance
2. Dedication. Maintain continuous rolling operations to support paving crew productivity and prevent delays in the paving process
3. Determined. Deliver smooth, uniform asphalt surfaces by applying proper rolling patterns and eliminating marks, ridges, and imperfections
4. Safety always wins. Operate roller safely in close proximity to paving equipment, traffic, and crew members
5. Obligated. Apply appropriate rolling techniques based on material temperature, lift thickness, and site conditions
6. Committed to serve. Maximize equipment performance through daily inspections and proper operation of roller systems (water, vibration, etc.)
7. Respect and engage. Coordinate closely with paver operators, screed operators, and foremen to ensure proper timing and compaction results
8. Efficiency. Minimize rework by achieving density requirements the first time and maintaining consistent rolling patterns
9. Mastery. Adjust rolling methods in real time based on field conditions, mix behavior, and project requirements

Requirements, Education and Experience:

1. Demonstrated experience operating asphalt rollers (steel drum and/or pneumatic preferred)
2. Strong understanding of compaction principles, rolling patterns, and timing in asphalt paving
3. Ability to recognize and respond to changes in material temperature and site conditions
4. Experience working in active paving environments with close coordination among crew members
5. Ability to work in a fast-paced, production-driven setting while maintaining quality standards
6. Strong communication and teamwork skills
7. Mechanical aptitude to identify basic equipment issues and support preventative maintenance
8. High attention to detail to ensure proper density and surface finish
9. High school diploma or equivalent preferred
10. Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
11. Ability and willingness to work variable shifts, including nights and weekends as needed
12. Authorized to work in the U.S.

Travel:

Position may require up to 100% travel by personal vehicle to project locations throughout the state of Rhode Island and New England based on the needs of the business.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

This position works outdoors in various weather conditions on active construction sites. The role requires extended periods of sitting while operating equipment, as well as frequent climbing in and out of machinery.

Work is performed near moving mechanical parts, hot asphalt materials, and loud equipment. The role requires good hand-eye coordination, depth perception, and the ability to maintain awareness in a dynamic work environment.

Physical activities may include walking on uneven terrain, bending, reaching, and repetitive motions. Occasional lifting of materials up to 25–50 pounds may be required. Employees must be able to communicate effectively in noisy environments and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
