About This Position

Position Description: The Director of the Shafer Art Gallery is responsible for the leadership, stewardship, and daily operation of the Gallery as a cultural and educational asset of Barton Community College. This role creates a welcoming and engaging visual arts experience for students, faculty and staff, community members, and artists by overseeing rotating exhibitions and the permanent art collection. Responsibilities include curatorial planning and exhibition design, collection management and preservation, operational administration, and collaboration with campus and community partners. The Director advances the Gallerys mission through thoughtful programming, professional standards of care, and strategic coordination with the College and the Barton Community College Foundation. Position Responsibilities: 25.00% - General Manager/Finance Coordinator:
Manage the daily operations and routine functions of the Shafer Art Gallery, including general office administration, exhibit budgeting, business forms, and financial tracking. Maintain accurate files and records to ensure effective use of College resources. Develop and achieve goals and pursue grant funding that supports and advances the mission of the Shafer Art Gallery and Barton Community College. Coordinate with the Communications Department on publicity and promotional efforts related to exhibitions and gallery activities.
30.00% - Curator/Exhibition Manager and Designer:
Research, plan, and develop high-quality exhibitions that support the educational mission of the College and encourage campus and community engagement. Prepare for and oversee the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions using recommended handling and conservation methods to ensure proper care of artworks. Plan, coordinate, and host opening receptions and related programs for each exhibition, which may include guest speakers or artists. Compile and analyze gallery attendance records, exhibition evaluations, and measures of overall exhibition success to inform future planning and programming.

30.00% - Collections Manager/Archivist/Conservator:
Maintain proper security, confidentiality, preservation, and storage methods for the permanent art collection and all works on loan or on exhibition. Manage inventories and records for the permanent collection, short- and long-term loans, grant documentation, and gifts received. Ensure compliance with best practices in collections care and documentation. Train and supervise advisory board members and volunteers who assist with exhibitions, and oversee maintenance of the Gallerys website to ensure current and accurate information.
5.00% - Performs other duties as needed or assigned.
10.00% - Educational Programming Coordinator:
Develop and deliver hands-on educational and creative programming through the Glenn and Elaine Mull Family Art Cart Program. Collaborate with Barton faculty, students, campus groups, and community partners including local elementary, middle, and high schools provide accessible art experiences.
Expectations: Manage the daily operation of the gallery and have it open to the public during scheduled hours and special events. Maintain security, preservation and storage methods for all of the permanent collection including the inventory data base, reports, and audit documents.
Prepare gallery publicity for all types of media including on-line, radio ads, and newspaper. Participate in community, college and educational activities as they relate to College responsibilites. Seek opportunities to promote the Gallery to civic organizations. Work with campus and community personnel responding to requests for information and assistance in a positive and professional manner.
Supervise the installation and deinstallation of exhibits under normal protocol and individual exhibit guidelines. Provide leadership, organize and develop exhibits for the gallery coordinating events to promote the exhibits. Plan and manage an opening reception for each new exhibit which may include guest speakers.
Work with the Foundation and advisory boards to develop policies and procedures. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Experience - Two years to five years of similar or related experience.
Education - A Bachelor's degree.
Interpersonal Skills - A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required, in addition to normal courtesy and tact. Work involves extensive personal contact with others and/or can be of a personal or sensitive nature. Work may involve motivating or influencing others. Outside contacts become important and fostering sound relationships with other entities (companies and/or individuals) becomes necessary and often requires the ability to influence and/or sell ideas or services to others.
Other Skills - A Bachelor Degree is required. MFA preferred. Physical Requirements: The work requires moderate physical exertion such as long periods of standing, repetitively lifting lightweight objects with frequent bending or stooping, recurring lifting of moderately heavy items such as computer, printers or record boxes. Occasionally lifts heavy objects (over 50 pounds). Job requires average agility and dexterity. Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office or classroom.
Wages/Other:

The salary for this position is $60,458.98 to $67,520.59.
