Clinic RN

POSITION OVERVIEW (non-exempt):

Creates a professional office image by providing superior customer service while effectively assisting the medical providers in the care and treatment of patients, and by working cooperatively with other staff members to promote a smooth flow of work within the office. Performs assigned procedures and duties within the scope of practice as set forth by the Iowa State Board of Nursing. Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

This position is primarily assigned to General Surgery and will also float to other Professional Clinic specialties as needed, including Orthopedics, Rheumatology, and Pain Management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a current Iowa RN license
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
  • Experience in a physician’s office preferred
  • Computer skills preferred

ACCOUNTABILITY:

Reports to Professional Clinic Manager

DIRECT REPORTS:

None

POSITION-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Assists with in-office patient care: Rooms patients and takes vital signs, obtains history and nursing assessments. Assists or performs procedures as directed by the physician (dressing changes, suture removal, etc).
  • Performs patient teaching.
  • Obtains consents. Communicates with other hospital departments to schedule tests and procedures.
  • Calls pharmacies to order prescribed medications and refills as directed by provider.
  • Returns calls from patients, pharmacies, other providers in a timely manner.
  • Processes home care orders, communicating with provider(s), outside agencies and patients as needed.
  • Accurately, completely, legibly and in a timely manner documents findings and outcomes of all above interactions in patient’s electronic health record.
  • Performs telephone triage according to provider-approved protocols and schedules work-in appointments for acute patients.
  • Contacts insurance companies for pre-certification in conjunction with prior authorization team if needed.
  • Collaborates with Central Stores to order and track medical supplies and equipment. Stocks medical supplies in treatment and exam rooms.
  • Cleans and bags treatment room instruments. Takes and receives instruments from Central Supply for sterilization as needed.
  • Cleans rooms between patients and as needed.
  • Check sample medications for outdates monthly and properly disposes of outdated medications as needed.
  • Prepares patient charts and obtains necessary records as indicated.
  • Assists office staff as needed.
  • Performs general duties as needed or assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Works in a well-illuminated, climate-controlled environment
  • May come in contact with hazardous chemical or treatment modalities
  • Possibility exists of exposure to communicable diseases
  • Involvement in inpatient care may result in unavoidable work-related illness or injury
  • Work environment is comfortable, with minimal exposure to physical hazards
  • Moderate to loud noise environment when machines/equipment in use
  • Involvement in checking in/moving of supplies may result in unavoidable work-related injury
  • Must be constantly alert for patient/family emergency situations
