About This Position
Job Summary:
The Metallurgical Intern maintains the Company’s quality and production objectives by supporting the Montague team through a variety of projects.
Responsibilities
· Become familiar with Quality and Production standards relative to the Melting, Casting, and Heat-Treating areas of the Montague Facility.
· Identify and work to resolve potential safety concerns
· Required to follow any other instructions and to perform any other duties upon request of the supervisor
· When necessary, participate in classes and training seminars to learn new technologies and techniques deemed helpful to performance on the job
· Regularly scheduled follow up training and competency evaluation will take place annually and be included with an employee’s annual evaluation summary and maintained by HR in the employee records.
· Other duties as assigned
Assist with monitoring and optimizing molten metal and heat-treating (35%)
· Audit process parameters and monitor production data
· Detects potential issues and assists in correcting them
· Works with Melt and Heat Treat teams to stabilize processes
· Suggests improvements to work instructions, training methods, and process documentation
Conduct problem solving analyses through engagement of cross functional teams (25%)
· Evaluate accuracy of measurement systems
· Work with cross functional teams to determine relationships between process inputs and performance metrics
· Develop testing plans to evaluate improvements
· Analyze test results and prepare reports with recommendations
· Present results to Montague Team
Propose and implement continuous improvement ideas in business efficiency and cost reduction (25%)
· Investigate potential reductions in energy and supply costs for Melt and Heat Treat equipment
· Work with suppliers on testing alternative materials, components, and methods to reduce costs
· Identify common equipment failure modes and work to reduce occurrences and improve the early detection of issues
Assist with the evaluation and prevention of metallurgical defects (15%)
· Uses metallographic, spectrochemical, and mechanical testing, to evaluated samples
· Coordinate with external laboratories as needed.
· Preparation of laboratory reports and presentations
Academic Requirements
· Working towards bachelor’s degree in Engineering; metallurgical preferred
Required Skills & Experience
· Basic knowledge of aluminum foundry processes
· Knowledge of analytical statistics relative to problem solving
· Strong initiative and desire to learn
· Ability to work in a team setting or work independently on assignments
· Strong communication skills
· Microsoft Office skills
· Prior intern, office or manufacturing experience preferred
· Proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications
· The person in this environment works at a fast pace with multiple priorities. There is no travel required to fulfill this position.
