About the Role

Maintenance of parks, greenbelts, open space, irrigation, horticultural, turf, playground equipment, park structures, snow/ice removal, snowplowing, and assist in other departmental divisions within Public Works as needed.

Supervision Received

Works under the general guidance of the Parks Supervisor and Assistant Parks Supervisor.

Supervision Exercised

May assist the Parks Supervisor and Assistant Parks Supervisor with supervision of seasonal parks maintenance workers, volunteers, and community service workers, as required and assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with the training and supervision of seasonal parks maintenance workers, volunteers, and community service workers.

  • Mow and maintain parks, greenbelts, and open space areas.

  • Inspect irrigation systems in parks and greenbelts as directed by the supervisor.

  • Inspect and perform routine maintenance of park facilities and restrooms.

  • Maintain public facilities such as playing fields, volleyball courts, basketball courts, playgrounds, public restrooms, and picnic shelters.

  • Perform minor semi-skilled maintenance of park equipment, restrooms, and picnic shelters.

  • Perform routine maintenance on lawn, power tools, and equipment.

  • Assist in ice skating facilities maintenance.

  • Plant and maintain landscaping, including lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers.

  • Carry out the seeding, fertilizing, topdressing, soil conditioning, watering, and pest and weed control of parks and open spaces.

  • Maintain and adjust specialized turf care equipment and tools, including electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, tractors, mowers, and irrigation systems.

  • Operate numerous pieces of light and heavy equipment; a variety of hand tools, meters, and gauges in the maintenance of public parks and facilities, such as brooms, rakes, shovels, skid loaders, lawn mowing equipment, backhoes, snowplows, front-end loaders, etc.

  • Assist in setting up and taking down equipment for various park and recreation programs and events. Working Community Cleanup Day (a Saturday in early to mid-May) and Gypsum Daze (the third weekend in July) are required for this job.

  • Prepare and maintain logs and records concerning the maintenance of facilities, the use of fertilizers, chemicals, pesticides, and herbicides, and the general needs of vehicles and equipment used in public parks and facilities.

  • Plow and maintain Public Roadways and trails as assigned.

  • Establish and maintain professional and good working relationships with fellow employees, the general public, and outside vendors.

  • Must be capable of performing duties in conjunction with other divisions within the department through cross-training, such as vehicle maintenance, building and grounds, trash, and water operations.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Lawnmowing tools/equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Maintaining hand/power tools commonly used in park/lawn maintenance.
  • Safety practices and principles related to the use of hand/power tools.
  • Basic computer skills to include the ability to use Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • First aid and applicable safety precautions.

Ability to:

  • Learn new software programs utilized within Public Works.
  • Drive and operate equipment, vehicles, and power/hand tools safely.
  • Read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memorandums.
  • Willingness to learn additional duties, as needed.
  • Work effectively in both self-directed and team environments.
  • Establish successful working relationships both internally and externally.
  • Communicate with the public, read, write, and understand English, and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Participate in an after-hours/on-call rotating schedule within the department.
  • Attend meetings or seminars that are necessary for improved job performance.
  • Work independently or in group settings to complete daily activities according to the work schedule.
  • Perform basic mathematical computations.

Skill in:

  • Equipment and tool maintenance and operations.
  • Safe and efficient operation of vehicles, equipment, and power-driven/hand tools.
  • Excellent written and oral business communications with citizens and outside agencies.
  • Excellent interpersonal communications with team members, peers, supervisors, citizens, and outside agencies.Safe operation of electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, and irrigation systems.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • One year of experience in general maintenance.
  • Previous municipal government experience is desirable.

OR

  • Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Additional Requirements

  • Must have a valid Colorado Driver's license.
  • Must be available to be on call as assigned by the Parks Supervisor or Assistant Supervisor.
  • Position may require considerable contact with town, local, and state officials, as well as major developers and the general public. Requires considerable interpersonal skills in representing the needs of the Town and in enforcing applicable policies and/or ordinances in an impartial manner.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to various outdoor weather conditions, bending, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, noise, and/or fumes on an ongoing basis. Must be capable of lifting up to 60 lbs.
