Mechanical Designer – Automated Equipment (Manufacturing / Lights‑Out Operations)

This role focuses on designing automated equipment, robotic machine‑tending systems, and integrated mechanical solutions that support our long‑term vision of lights‑out manufacturing. Key Responsibilities
Automated Equipment & System Design
- Design custom automated machinery, robotic cells, and machine‑tending solutions for CNCs, fabrication equipment, and assembly processes.
- Develop detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings using industry‑standard tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo).
- Engineer mechanisms, tooling, end‑of‑arm tooling (EOAT), conveyors, guarding, and precision fixturing.
- Perform tolerance stack‑ups, motion studies, and mechanical simulations to validate design performance.
- Integrate industrial robots (e.g., FANUC, ABB, KUKA, UR) into automated workflows.
- Design mechanical interfaces for robotic loading/unloading, part presentation, and automated material handling.
- Collaborate with controls engineers to ensure seamless mechanical‑electrical integration.
- Support the development of fully automated, unattended (lights‑out) production strategies.
- Identify opportunities to reduce manual intervention through mechanical innovation.
- Improve reliability, maintainability, and uptime of automated systems.
- Work cross‑functionally with controls, electrical, machining, and production teams.
- Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and FMEA activities.
- Support equipment build, commissioning, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement efforts on the shop floor.
- Manage documentation, BOMs, revision control, and engineering change processes.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, or related field.
- 3–7 years of experience designing automated equipment, special machines, or robotics‑integrated systems.
- Strong proficiency in 3D CAD modeling and mechanical drafting.
- Proficiency in PDM
- Knowledge of pneumatics, linear motion systems, servo mechanisms, and industrial automation components.
- Experience with GD&T, DFM/DFA principles, and machining/manufacturing processes.
- Familiarity with robotic integration, safety standards, and machine guarding requirements.
- Strong problem‑solving mindset and mechanical intuition.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and organizational skills.
- Curiosity, adaptability, and a passion for automation and innovation.
