BASIC FUNCTION:

Registered Nurse who is responsible for the overall direction of patient care at Aultman Alliance Community Hospital (AACH), on the off shift, weekends/holidays. The R.N. Supervisor controls and supervises the provision of patient care, observing and evaluating the quality and functioning of patient-care areas, and provides administrative oversight for all departments during the absence of the Hospital Administrator and the Vice President of Patient Care Services. The Supervisor responds to the needs of the hospital for overall administrative problem-solving in response to immediate needs (including Code Yellow ~ [disaster] until the administrator on call arrives on site), collaborates effectively with the management team to facilitate a continuous and effective process of communication & problem-solving to ensure patient quality care and safety.

JOB DUTIES:

  1. Possesses human relation skills to project a courteous, enthusiastic, and professional image for the Hospital. Leads nursing staff by example.
  2. Displays a professional, knowledgeable manner in coordinating patient care, facilitates discharge planning in the absence of the Case Manager or the department unit manager.
  3. Evidence of interest and continuance of professional growth.
  4. Evidence of management skills – includes managing complaints/grievance phone calls on off hours, weekends and holidays
  5. Promotes fiscal responsibility as evidenced by sound decision making in staffing clinical units.
  6. Remains competent in policies and procedures and encourages clinical staff to utilize policies.
  7. Promotes a sense of teamwork in all clinical areas.
  8. Promotes the Planetree philosophy of patient-centered care.
  9. Mentors and educates staff as needed. – off shifts are staffed with many novice nurses who seek guidance frequently related to procedures and protocols requiring the NS to be present to provide guidance.
  10. Pharmaceutical duties after hours. – this includes obtaining po mediations, mixing diluents with antibiotics to make an IV antibiotic for infusion, obtaining and mixing TPA a high alert medication for stroke patients, obtaining patient-controlled analgesic (PCA) medications
  11. Respond to CCC according to specific AACH policies. – this includes Code Blue and medical assist – high risk/acuity concerns; typically, the patient is transferred to ED.
  12. Coordinate procedural services afterhours. - this includes booking the surgical process, notifying pharmacy, notifying imaging, calling in the OR team and PACU team and obtaining additional staff and surgical needs of the surgeon. This process also includes booking outpatient special procedure (OSP) processes after hours.
  13. Respond to and completes “At Risk” assessments. – in compliance with the HFAP requirement to screen all patients for being at risk for self-harm, NS is required to interview and complete the SBAR screening tool, contact the patient’s physician/counselor to inform him/her of the positive screening and follow their further directions, provide the patient with out-patient services contacts, utilize Stark county crisis mobile team if warranted, direct patient to ED if necessary and have security intervene to ensure patient safety if required to ensure patient safety.
  14. Facilitate postmortem care/family decisions. - many times, families are not prepared for their loved one’s death and the decedent is taken to the morgue. NS must continue to follow through with the families to ensure the decedent’s postmortem care. This process can take 2-5 days, with the NS being the only AACH advocate for the deceased.
  15. Gather and submit AACH daily throughput and productivity and convey information via daily email. - NS continually gathers data in a 24-hour period that convey throughput and productivity; conveys placement of floats for cost centers and call offs for managers to maintain their attendance records
  16. Responsible for checking e-mails and online learning assignments on a regular basis.
  17. Other duties as assigned.

AGE APPROPRIATE CARE:

  1. Colleague has been instructed in providing customer service and on interacting with age groups as related to the department's general client population: including use of appropriate interventions, communication and skills to match the age and/or abilities of the patient/family.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT USED:

  1. Must be able to handle all tools used in the Nursing division.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. Graduate of a state accredited school of Nursing and currently licensed in the State of Ohio.
  2. Minimum of 3-5 years clinical experience as a Staff Nurse in which supervisory abilities have been demonstrated. Advanced degree preferred.
  3. Must possess current certification in ACLS or obtain with 6 months.
  4. CIDE within 3 months.
  5. BLS required through American Heart Association.
  6. PALS and NRP are highly recommended.
  7. Must be computer literate to complete task(s) as required.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

  1. Analytical thought processes with broad prospective regarding the efficient flow of work and information within ACH.
  2. Knowledge and use of resources necessary to maintain quality patient care.
  3. Clinical skill necessary to perform efficiently in emergency situations such as codes.
  4. In-depth knowledge of the current policies & procedures of AACH.
  5. Maintains a personal appearance that is neat, well groomed, and professional. Must be tolerant of people in stressful situations

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Able to stand/walk for duration of shift.
  2. Able to bend to reach items on floor or bedside level.
  3. Able to reach overhead.
  4. Able to reach over a bed far enough to give care and turn patients.
  5. Able to push or pull patients or necessary equipment (i.e. wheelchair, EKG machine, code cart).
  6. Able to lift 50 lbs. intermittently, unassisted.
  7. Able to move/transfer and ambulate patients unassisted and/or assisted as necessary using good body mechanics or appropriate techniques (i.e. slide board, total lift).
  8. Able to climb onto step stool and to apply a minimum of 25-pound pressure/force for compressions during CPR.
  9. Able to wear personal protective equipment for an extended period of time, as necessary, (i.e. mask, goggles, etc.).
  10. Able to turn and twist as necessary.
  11. Able to squat, kneel, or crawl as necessary.
  12. Ability to see clearly and hear normal speaking voices.
  13. Able to communicate verbally and over the telephone in a clear speech.
  14. Able to write legibly
