Grounds Keeper at The Valley Hunt Club – Pasadena, California

Job Summary:

The Groundskeeper maintains the beauty, safety, and playability of The Valley Hunt Club’s outdoor grounds and landscaped areas, including lawns, gardens, trees, walkways, sports surfaces, and event spaces. This role performs daily horticultural care, routine maintenance, and seasonal projects to ensure an immaculate environment that reflects the Club’s standards of excellence and hospitality.

Essential Functions:

Landscape & Turf Care

• Prune, deadhead, stake, and shape shrubs, hedges, and ornamental trees in accordance with best horticultural practices.
• Plant, transplant, and maintain annuals, perennials, and seasonal displays; amend soils and mulch beds.
• Monitor turf and plant health; identify pests, diseases, irrigation issues, or nutrient deficiencies and report or treat as directed.

Irrigation & Water Management

• Inspect, adjust, and conduct minor repairs on irrigation lines, emitters, sprinkler heads, valves, and timers.
• Execute seasonal irrigation schedules and water-conservation practices aligned with local regulations and Club policies.
• Report leaks, coverage gaps, or controller malfunctions promptly.

Grounds Maintenance & Appearance

• Maintain walkways, drives, and common areas: blowing, sweeping, power washing, leaf/litter removal, and weed control.
• Maintain outdoor fixtures and furnishings: benches, umbrellas, planters, signage, and light poles.
• Support setup and breakdown of outdoor Club events (tables, décor, heating units, tent staking, etc.).
• Assist with pool deck, racquet courts periphery, and sports-area cleanliness.

Equipment Operation & Care

• Safely operate mowers, trimmers, blowers, hedgers, chainsaws, and other grounds equipment.
• Perform basic equipment care: cleaning, blade changes, lubrication, and pre/post-use inspections; report maintenance needs.

Safety & Compliance

• Follow all safety procedures and wear required PPE; practice safe lifting and equipment operation.
• Mix, apply, and store fertilizers and pest-control products per label, SDS, and Club protocols (under supervision if required).
• Secure work areas during operations to protect members, guests, and staff.

Teamwork & Service

• Coordinate daily priorities with the Grounds Lead/Supervisor and Director of Facilities Operations.
• Respond courteously to member and staff requests; maintain a professional, service-oriented demeanor.
• Document completed tasks and report issues through the work order system.

Schedule

• Early mornings may be required. Availability for weekends, holidays, and special events as needed.

Qualifications:

• 1–3 years of experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, or horticulture; private club, resort, or high-end residential experience preferred.
• Working knowledge of turf care, plant identification, pruning, fertilization, irrigation, and weed/pest management.
• Ability to safely operate grounds equipment and hand tools.
• Reliable, punctual, detail-oriented, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
• Basic English communication skills; bilingual a plus.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time during an entire shift
• Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, and lifting overhead required.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work on ladders, roofs, or confined spaces when needed.
• Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
