Who We Are Looking For:

The Special Systems Apprentice must learn and possess the skills required to function as a contributing member of a technical team.

What will you be doing as a Special Systems Apprentice:

  • The Special Systems Apprentice will install a work area outlet for floor, modular furniture, and wall (terminate CAT 5E and 6 jacks, Mount face plates and surface mount boxes correctly, adhere to ANM labeling standards).
  • The Special Systems Apprentice will build closets (Mount and install backboards, cross-connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic, and hardware). Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cable as required. Complete all IDC connections (e.g. terminate 110/66 blocks and patch panels).
  • The Special Systems Apprentice performs testing: continuity test horizontal and riser cable; use of volt-ohmmeter; troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, and transpose pairs on horizontal and riser cable; use a tone set.
  • The Special Systems Apprentice will identify active voice or data circuits.
  • The Special Systems Apprentice will assume responsibility for the effective performance of the crew and provide necessary training, coordinate personnel, and timeline to complete the project.
  • The Special Systems Apprentice will fully complete all required paperwork accurately and on time (timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, tool transfers, and others as required).
  • The Special Systems Apprentice will adhere to and participate in all Company, customer, and industry quality and safety standards and regulations.
  • Notify the Lead Technician of any project delays onsite or issues on the project so that they can update the project stakeholders.
  • Work with the operations team to formulate a plan to minimize the cost impact and bring the project under budget when it is determined that a project is going over budget.
  • Low-voltage pathway installation
  • Installation and pulling of communications, security, and DAS cabling.
  • Termination, certification, and troubleshooting cabling.
  • Installation of security and communication equipment and devices.
  • Installation of low-voltage control panels and power supplies.
  • Configuration and start-up of security systems.
  • Installation of door hardware, locks, strikes, and request to exit devices.
  • The Special Systems Installer will complete other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • The Special Systems Apprentice must be self-motivated, positive in approach, and professional, and help create, develop, and implement project process improvement(s).
  • The Special Systems Apprentice must promote the Company culture and mission to all employees, vendors, clients, and business partners.
  • The Special Systems Apprentice must be able to work at heights, off of a ladder, and in confined spaces, lift up to 50 pounds, and move up to 75 pounds.
  • The Special Systems Apprentice must be able to see and distinguish different colors, read small print, and hear and recognize audible signals such as dial tones.
  • The Special Systems Apprentice must be able to travel within the branch territory and regional territory as needed.

Required education, technical skills, and/or experience:

  • Must possess at least a High School diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Must enroll in the NNMIEC special systems apprenticeship program. The apprenticeship is a 3-year program that requires 160 hours of classroom instruction annually.
  • Must possess and be proficient with the listed tools. See the required hand tool list.
  • Must learn skills to interpret blueprints and other project documents, including but not limited to specifications, reporting, and quality requirements.
  • Must know the universal communications color codes.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • The employee is expected to travel as needed for projects, including overnight stays.

Working Conditions:

The standard work environment for this position is an indoor business office and a construction environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear, use hands, stoop, kneel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The employee must regularly carry and climb ladders to 20 feet. The employee may also be required to work in tight, confined spaces. The physical demands described here represent those that must be met to perform the essential functions of this job successfully.
