Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Economic Research Managers, the WIN Data & Research Intern will be responsible for supporting research and other WIN staff for several labor market data and research projects. This position offers the opportunity to work on research, data requests, other projects to improve data utilization by the Michigan talent system, and how the talent system interacts with the overall state and regional economy. This role will include assistance regarding labor market analyses to better understand the connection between online job ads and employer hiring.

Essential Functions

  • Assist Economic Research Managers and other WIN staff with data requests from Partners.
  • Work closely with WIN research team to produce labor market analyses.
  • Assist WIN team with meeting preparation and data presentations.
  • Assist with research initiatives through data collection, analysis, writing, editing, and presentations.
  • Assist with outreach for completion of employer interviews, survey research, and various projects.
  • Participate in team meetings and strategy sessions.
  • Assist with posting relevant articles to WIN’s website and partner sites.
  • Assists team members with tasks or projects with vigilance and attention to detail and communicating potential risk factors to support the well-being of the organization.
  • Maintains confidentiality and safeguards employee and organizational integrity through diligent protection of data and systems.

Workplace Learning

The WIN Data and Research Intern will:

  • Work closely with Economic Research Managers and other WIN staff to learn about data sources and how to extract data.
  • Gain experience and knowledge in using Canva as a PDF editing and production platform.
  • Learn basic and mid-level statistical analysis skills.
  • Experience working directly with stakeholders in workforce and talent development.
  • Learn project budgeting and proposal development.
  • Gain experience writing for a diverse set of audiences and increase writing proficiency.
  • Learn advanced Microsoft excel and other data management and analysis skills including creating information graphs.
  • Participate in WIN training activities including but not limited to meeting facilitation, grant writing, and writing for communications.

Non-Essential Functions

  • All other duties as assigned.
Requirements:

Required Qualifications

All SEMCA team members are expected to be technically competent and committed to continuous development of their skills. The following skills, knowledge and education or certifications are specifically required for this position:

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in policy, economics, or a related field or equivalent experience pursuant to SEMCA’s Experience in Lieu of Education policy.
  • Position requires effective listening and verbal communication skills generally with immediate team and supervisor.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve and apply solutions, including identification of potential causes.
  • Ability to influence organizational well-being in data collection and analysis.
  • Microsoft office basics (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Basic Excel skills for data handling, including collecting, cleaning, and processing datasets.
  • Good written communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of labor’s role in the economy.
  • Reliable transportation to attend meetings in the metro-Detroit area (quarterly).

Physical Demands

Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment including a computer, vision to read printed materials on an LCD screen and smartphone, hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person and over the telephone.
