Independence and Innovation Specialist Responsibilities

The Independence and Innovation Specialist empowers individuals to lead fulfilling, self-directed lives through skill-building, community engagement, and personal growth. This role focuses on helping people work, live independently, and explore meaningful opportunities in their communities. Key responsibilities include facilitating Virtual Community Resource Mapping (VCRM), Community Navigation, Independence Coaching, and Employment Innovation. By identifying strengths and needs, the Specialist creates personalized paths to independence, aligning with state objectives and the organization’s mission.   • Support individuals in developing independent living skills using smartphones, tablets, and smart home devices. Provide ongoing coaching and promote peer mentoring for greater autonomy.
  • Conduct assessments to create tailored technology plans and follow up regularly to adjust to evolving needs.
  • Evaluate education, skills, and interests to assess readiness for employment and assist in exploring job and volunteer opportunities.
  • Facilitate individual and group outings to promote real-world skill development while connecting individuals to memberships and recreational opportunities.
  • Coordinate services with team members and maintain communication with families, guardians, and support networks to ensure holistic support.
  • Complete necessary documentation for state-required outcomes while ensuring adherence to privacy laws and ethical standards.
  • Utilize internal databases and systems to input, track, and update status reports and service progress.
  • Maintain communication with all relevant stakeholders, including families, guardians, Support Coordinators, and state agencies.
  • Participate in staff development opportunities, training, and continuing education for program compliance and professional growth.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma (or equivalent), bachelor’s degree in vocational rehabilitation or related field preferred.
  • One year of experience in a field or a closely related field.
  • Enabling Technology Integration Specialist (ETIS) preferred.
  • Must have a valid Tennessee driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • Duties may require occasional after-hours work and travel to organizational sites.
  • Required training/certifications provided by the organization, including CPR/First Aid.
