About This Position
SCOPE:
| The essential job function is performing the final welding of large weldments. This includes assisting with assembling or fitting of the weldments. |
EDUCATION:
| Associate’s degree from a trade school, community college or equivalent experience. |
EXPERIENCE/ REQUIREMENTS: | 5+ years experience in the welding, fitting, or fabricating field. |
| Determines required equipment and welding method to plan, layout, and weld applying knowledge of geometry, physical properties of metal machining weld shrinkage, and welding techniques. |
| Physical - must be able to stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, bend to the floor and lift up to 60 pounds without difficulty. Operate large cranes and forklifts and physical exposure from moving equipment and machine parts, periodically laying prone under machinery or on knees for completion of welding and mechanical tasks. Some ladder climbing. Working in confined spaces. Visual acuity for reading blueprints, especially weld symbols, and precision measuring instruments. |
| Mental - subject to frequent overtime requirements, changes in job duties and assignments (often without much notice), constant or frequent deadline pressures. Ability to consider alternatives and make decisions. Capability of mastering shop floor computer terminals and data recording. |

JOB FUNCTIONS: | Analyzes work orders and blue prints to determine need for supplies and the sequence of welding operations required. |
Lays out and positions welds as specified by blueprints, welding procedures, and weld charts by using straightedges, combination square, calipers, and ruler. | |
Has a thorough understanding of welding machines and comprehends their functionality. | |
Notifies the responsible person to reorder supplies. Completes daily time entry in to the MRP system to assure that the appropriate time is charged to the proper job. | |
Tack-welds or welds components and assemblies, using electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment. | |
Thoroughly understands the need for heating a plate to make it flat, perpendicular and parallel to the welded surface. | |
Continually focused on role as a team member, in terms of communication, work standards, et.al. | |
Welds flat, cylindrical or irregular shaped parts that may be clamped, tack-welded or otherwise positioned utilizing their knowledge of welding to prevent cracking of the welds. | |
Possess the knowledge of preheating parts to achieve the best welds and correctly applying anti-spatter. | |
Periodically, will have to travel off-site for upwards to 1 week to repair weldments. | |
Performs other duties as assigned. | |
Incumbent receives moderate degree of supervision. Minimal supervision is required once incumbent is fully trained; supervision monitored by the team. | |
Exposed to minimal degree of confidential information (e.g. Engineering prints). | |
Interfaces with assembly, machine shop, Engineering, and Quality. | |
Communicates daily with team associates, Engineering and Manufacturing. | |
Visually examines the welds for adherence to specifications and consults with Quality or Engineering for guidance. | |
Cuts work pieces, using powered saws or torch. | |
Observes tests on welded surfaces, such as hydrostatic, x-ray, and dimension tolerance to evaluate weld quality and conformance to specifications. | |
Inspects grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometer, calipers, and precision measuring instruments. | |
Removes rough spots from work piece, surplus slag, flux, and splatter using portable grinder, hand scrapers or pneumatic scalers. | |
Welds components in flat, vertical, and overhead positions, sometimes in confined spaces. | |
Develops templates and other work aids to hold and align parts. | |
Make repairs to broken or cracked frames or joints by gouging or scarfing surfaces per Engineering directions. | |
Operates overhead bridge crane, gantry crane or jib crane in a safe manner to position parts for assembly. | |
Will set up welding machines to make trial welds and will train workers in the operation of welding equipment. |
All associates shall:
