The Director of Strategic Product and Portfolio Management is responsible for creating and driving the underwriting strategic vision and initiatives to improve underwriting efficiencies, product usage, and support company objectives. This position drives the evolution of the underwriting team, process, and technology through internal collaborative discussion, mentoring team members, and continued focus on market and technology opportunities arising in the industry. This role requires the ability to lead projects with successful change management, knowledge of insurance risk, project management, data analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence applicability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify, organize, and deliver strategic opportunities for Underwriting efficiency, product enhancements, and user experience through analysis of internal data, industry or other related data, machine learning models, auditing, etc.
  • Lead or assign projects to cross-functional teams, including Corporate and Operational Underwriting, Product Marketing Management, Sales, BI Analytics, Pricing, Underwriting, Claims, IT, Compliance, Reinsurance, Reserving, and Product Development to implement strategic opportunities.
  • Create ongoing processes improvements to drive essential business functions, including managing or creating product availability rules, policy, product and coverage placement, IT related enhancements from creation to delivery, cross-departmental communication loops, etc.
  • Create and deliver strategic overview or Roadmap of new innovative changes, recommendations, known issues, and enhancements to ensure appropriate use of resources and eliminate duplicate efforts or inefficiencies.
  • Create robust data driven analysis that illustrates the existing outcomes of current process and expected return on investment for underwriting projects and initiatives, which is provided to Executive Leadership for project prioritization and post-release review.
  • Work with executive leadership to lead strategized prioritization of effort to ensure prerequisite work is handled in the appropriate order to support future planned initiatives.
  • Serve as a mentor and trainer for team members throughout the organization to foster individual skill development and improve project outcomes.
  • Monitor portfolio performance and align strategic initiatives to expected portfolio results. Create data driven explanations of impact of process changes over time.
  • Collaborate with business units, IT, and Business Intelligence to improve data accessibility and manage data integrity through the evolution of process changes.
  • Monitor and manage team project assignments to ensure appropriate resource usage and intended outcomes are achieved. Provide regular updates to Underwriting leadership regarding deadlines, performance, and resource spend.

Requirements:

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Business, Marketing, Underwriting, Statistics, Finance, Product Management, Risk Management, or related field required. Master’s Degree preferred.

Equivalent experience may substitute for minimum educational requirements. Equivalent experience may include eight (8) years of relevant experience.

EXPERIENCE

Minimum of seven (7) to ten (10) years of relevant work experience required, including Underwriting management, Product Management, Portfolio Management or Project Management. Experience leading directly reporting staff and/or successful completion of leadership training required.

Prior experience in Personal Lines Property & Casualty insurance preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS

Relevant designations, including but not limited to, Certified Product Manager [CPM], Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter [CPCU], Project Management Professional (PMP) required.

LICENSES

Valid Driver’s License required.
