Position Description
The Mechanics Shop Foreman is a hands-on leader who oversees day-to-day maintenance and repair activities in the shop, supports floor mechanics with current jobs, performs complex diagnostics and repairs, and ensures work orders are completed safely, on time, and to quality standards. Yellow iron (heavy construction equipment) experience is preferred. In the absence of the Maintenance Manager, the Foreman is responsible for coordinating workflows, prioritizing jobs, and ensuring timely completions.

Position Description

Technical & Operational
- Perform and direct heavy diesel diagnostics, repairs, and rebuilds (engines, transmissions, hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical, cooling systems).
- Support floor mechanics on active jobs: triage, troubleshooting, test procedures, and repair strategy.
- Assist with maintenance of yellow iron (e.g., loaders, excavators, dozers, graders), trucks, trailers, and support equipment.
- Verify repair quality: road-test/functional-test equipment, and ensure documentation accuracy.
- Execute PM schedules and corrective work; monitor repeat failures and help drive root-cause analysis.
- Maintain tool control, shop housekeeping , and safe equipment staging; enforce lockout/tagout and other safety procedures.
- Assign technicians to work orders based on skills, priority, and parts availability.
- Train and mentor mechanics on diagnostic workflows, proper repair practices, and documentation.
- Monitor labor utilization and productivity; balance urgent repairs with planned PM tasks.
- Serve as acting lead when the Maintenance Manager is away—set priorities, approve job completions, and escalate issues.
- Review and update work orders in the company CMMS; record labor time, parts, and notes.
- Maintain service records, inspection logs, and compliance files (e.g., DOT inspections, emissions, and equipment safety checks).
- Prepare next-day work plans; communicate parts backorders and vendor ETAs.
- Assist with purchasing requests, quotes, and vendor follow-up.
- Support onboarding of new mechanics; maintain training records and skill matrices.
- Model safe work practices; ensure adherence to OSHA, DOT, and company policies.
- Conduct/participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and incident reviews; implement corrective actions.
- Ensure PPE use, machine guarding, and proper handling/disposal of oils, coolants, and hazardous materials.
Required
- 5+ years of heavy diesel mechanic experience with strong diagnostics across engines, hydraulics, electrical, and driveline systems.
- Demonstrated experience with construction “yellow iron” equipment (preferred).
- 2+ years in a lead or foreman capacity (assigning work, coaching techs, closing work orders).
- Proficiency with scan tools, service literature, schematics, and CMMS/work-order systems.
- Ability to read technical drawings, torque specs, and apply OEM repair procedures.
- Microsoft Office knowledge, Excel, Word, Outlook,
- Valid driver's license; clean MVR; ability to pass pre-employment screening.
Preferred
- ASE or OEM certifications (diesel, electrical, hydraulics); CDL-B; forklift certification.
- Aid with coordinating warranty work with equipment dealers/OEMs.
- Environment: Shop-based with periodic field support. Exposure to noise, fumes, oils, coolants, and moving equipment.
- Physical Demands: Frequent standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in confined spaces; lift/push/pull up to 75 lbs; manual and power-tool use.
- Schedule: Full-time; primarily day shift with occasional extended hours, evenings, or weekends for breakdowns or project deadlines.
- PPE: Safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, steel-toe boots; respiratory protection as tasks require.
- Travel: Minimal, limited to local sites for field repairs and vendor trips.
