General Summary:
The Assistant Controller will assist the Associate Vice President, Controller in managing the organization’s financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, reporting, and compliance. This position is responsible for overseeing daily accounting functions, supporting the preparation of financial statements, and ensuring compliance with organizational policies and applicable regulations. The Assistant Controller plays a key role in maintaining accurate financial records and providing timely, relevant information to support decision-making.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Stakeholder Interface
- Maintain accounting records and ensure compliance with established policies and procedures.
- Support the AVP, Controller in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Collaborate with other departments to provide financial data and analysis for decision-making.
- Assist in responding to inquiries from external auditors during audits and reviews.
Tracking, Document and Reporting
- Ensure the timely and accurate recording of transactions in the general ledger.
- Prepare reconciliations for key accounts, including bank accounts, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
- Assist in monitoring budget adherence and provide variance analysis for review by the AVP, Controller.
- Assist with contract and grant compliance reporting, ensuring adherence to applicable requirements.
Fiscal Reporting and Accountability
- Support the preparation of annual budgets and forecasts.
- Ensure financial records and documentation are maintained in accordance with organizational policies.
- Prepare reports and summaries for review by the AVP, Controller and senior leadership.
Supervision
- Depending on organizational needs, the Assistant Controller may supervise staff involved in accounting functions.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of accounting principles and practices, with a preference for experience in nonprofit accounting.
- Familiarity with budgeting, financial reporting, and variance analysis.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with attention to detail.
- Hands-on experience and self-sufficiency with Microsoft productivity tools, including Outlook (for email), Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), and online collaboration tools (video conferencing, Zoom/Teams, messaging).
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
- CPA designation preferred or actively working toward certification.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or similar role.
