Description:

As a vital member of our leadership team, the Director of Finance will oversee all financial operations, integrating fiscal strategy with organizational priorities to ensure sustainability and growth. This role consolidates and expands on the duties of the Finance Controller, with responsibilities spanning budgeting, grant compliance, financial analysis, and strategic planning.

Essential Responsibilities:

Financial Leadership and Strategy

  • Design and implement financial strategies to support The Women’s Home’s mission and long-term goals.
  • Lead the development of an annual budget that aligns with programmatic and operational priorities, incorporating input from department heads.
  • Conduct multi-year financial forecasting and provide actionable insights to senior leadership to ensure sustainable growth.
  • Evaluate financial performance and make recommendations to optimize program funding and organizational operations.
  • Actively participate in strategic planning and leadership meetings, providing expertise to guide decision-making.

Accounting and Reporting

  • Oversee all accounting operations, including payroll, accounts payable and receivable, journal entries, reconciliations, and general ledger management.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all finance department audits, working directly with auditors, compiling requested documentation, and facilitating communication to ensure compliance and efficient audit completion.
  • Prepare timely and accurate financial reports, including monthly financials, grant-specific reports, and annual financial statements, for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP) and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate and manage external audits, ensuring smooth processes and timely resolution of findings.
  • Update and maintain the chart of accounts, grant/project codes, and department reporting structures within financial systems.

Grant Management and Compliance

  • Collaborate with program teams to create grant budgets, financial reports, and compliance documentation.
  • Monitor restricted and unrestricted funds, ensuring proper tracking, allocation, and reporting.
  • Ensure adherence to grantor requirements and communicate financial expectations to program leaders.

Operational Leadership

  • Manage and mentor the finance team, fostering an environment of collaboration, professional growth, and accountability.
  • Implement financial systems and technology solutions to streamline operations and enhance reporting capabilities.
  • Develop internal controls and policies to safeguard organizational assets and maintain financial integrity.
  • Oversee treasury functions, including cash flow management, investments, and financial planning.
  • Collaborate with department leaders to evaluate program costs, analyze funding strategies, and identify efficiencies.

Collaboration and Culture Building

  • Partner with HR to analyze the financial impact of workforce planning, compensation structures, and benefits.
  • Collaborate with the Development team to provide accurate financial data for donor reports, proposals, and fundraising campaigns.
  • Uphold and integrate the organization’s core values in all financial processes and interactions.
  • Act as a liaison to the Board of Directors, preparing financial presentations and participating in committee meetings.

Other Responsibilities

  • Conduct ad-hoc financial analyses to support special projects and initiatives.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and nonprofit accounting best practices.
  • Serve as a resource and advisor to the CEO and leadership team on financial matters.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • CPA or CMA designation strongly preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in financial management, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven track record in nonprofit financial management, including grant compliance, fund accounting, and audits.
  • Experience working with government contracts and funding preferred.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Technical Expertise: Advanced knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards, GAAP, and grant compliance.
  • Analytical Acumen: Proficiency in financial modeling, forecasting, and data analysis.
  • Technology Proficiency: Experience with financial systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Blackbaud FENXT) and advanced Excel skills.
  • Team Management: Proven ability to build, lead, and develop high-performing teams.
  • Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex data clearly.
  • Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills to foster partnerships across departments and with external stakeholders.
  • Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy in financial analysis, reporting, and compliance.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license.
