Intern at Virginia Economic Development Partnership – Richmond, Virginia

VEDP is seeking a GIS and Cartography Intern in the Research Division during the summer of 2026 (10 weeks). The Intern will collaborate with the Cartography team on the creation and maintenance of cartographic products that help clients and staff understand the strengths of Virginia as a business location and secure new jobs and investment for the Commonwealth. The ideal candidate is seeking on-the-job experience in cartographic design within an established brand and utilizing GIS in a professional, economic development, and/or state government setting. Interns will complete a project and develop a presentation to be shared with staff at the end of the internship. They will be part of an organization-wide cohort, providing networking and professional development opportunities throughout the summer.

Duties:

• Update a selection of VEDP's Standard Maps including GIS data and cartography utilizing ArcGIS Pro and other software as needed
• Assist in creating or maintaining update process documentation for Standard Maps
• Assist in other GIS tasks including custom map creation and data analysis as needed
• Engage with other staff in the Research Division and VEDP to complete requests and update materials across the brand
• Complete a final project by developing a project plan with your supervisor, executing the work, and preparing a brief presentation and visual for the intern showcase

Pursuit of a bachelor’s or graduate degree in GIS, Cartography, Geography, Information Systems, Urban Studies or related field is preferred.

The intern has the option to work: (i) full-time, hybrid – working a minimum of 24 hours per week (3 days) in our Richmond office and up to 16 hours per week (2 days) from home OR (ii) part-time, in person – working a minimum of 24 hours per week (3 days) in our Richmond office.
