ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Job functions may require practical application of knowledge of frequency management, facility and/or system equipment capabilities and limitations, local regulations relating to aircraft control, and industrial security regulations and guidance. Tasks may require incumbents to design, procure, implement and/or integrate complex RF and fiber-optic communications equipment. This technician may be required to follow detailed verbal and written instructions, diagrams and drawings from test engineers to set up complex test configurations and deployments on the ranges or in test labs; may be required to conduct various tests, missions or experiments that require modifications in test setups or procedures as well as subjective judgments in measurement; may be required to set up and operate test equipment and record test data; or assist engineers with test design modifications; may be required to be proficient in modifying range targets/target systems, constructing arenas and tactical deployment equipment for data collection, placement of targets and decoys, and operating associated fabricating and build-up equipment. May be required to fabricate range targets, construct arenas for data collection, construct velocity screens, place reinforced concrete targets, and operate associated fabricating and build-up equipment. Job function may require specialization in developmental and operational testing and proof of concept developmental programs. Specific areas may include airborne telemetry systems; GPS based Time-Space-Position-Information system, avionics data bus monitoring and control, drone and remote target control systems, RF data links and data acquisition systems. Programs may require expertise in development and systems engineering, circuit design, procurement, fabrication, documentation, configuration management, laboratory and installed system testing and training. This position requires incumbents to consistently exercise independent judgment. Incumbents may be required to respond to flight situations using procedures that apply to the facility/area; have a working knowledge of ballistic characteristics; and they must ensure test data is complete and consistent with test design modifications. They must ensure the safety and security of personnel, equipment, and information under assigned control.
GENERAL DUTIES:
- This technician will report to the AWEF supervisor and performs non-routine and complex assignments involving responsibility for planning and conducting a complete project of relatively limited scope or a portion of a larger and more diverse project, selects and adapts plans, techniques, designs, or layouts, contacts personnel in related activities to resolve problems and coordinate the work, reviews, analyzes, and integrates the technical work of others.
- Their job functions typically require practical application of advanced knowledge in specific areas such as electrical systems design/installation, civil engineering for structures or mechanical processes.
- Supervisor or professional engineer outlines objectives, requirements, and design approaches.
- Completed work is reviewed for technical adequacy and satisfaction of requirements.
- This incumbent may train and be assisted by lower-level technicians.
- Designs, develops, and constructs major units, devices, software systems, or equipment; conducts tests, missions, or experiments; analyzes results and redesigns or modifies equipment to improve performance; and reports results.
- Analyzes technical data to determine applicability to design problems; selects from several possible design layouts; calculates design data; and prepares layouts, detailed specifications, parts lists, estimates, procedures, etc.
- May check and analyze drawings or equipment to determine adequacy of drawings and design.
- Plans or assists in planning tests to evaluate equipment performance.
- Determines test requirements, equipment modification, and test procedures; conducts tests using all types of instruments; analyzes and evaluates test results and prepares reports on findings and recommendations.
- Be the subject matter experts in a specific field but, through breadth of experience, also proficient in any number of other specialized areas such as electronic systems design and construction, targets/target systems fabrication, design/construction of arenas, tactical deployment of equipment for data collection, placement of targets and decoys, and fabrication of test articles.
- Construction-related projects may range from fabrication of test articles, constructing arenas for data collection, construction of velocity screens, placing reinforced concrete targets, design and construction of facility layouts and structures, and operating associated fabrication and build-up equipment.
- These technicians may be required to create, fabricate, construct, operate or maintain specialized projects built using detailed written instructions, diagrams, photographs or drawings provided by test engineers.
- All completed work must meet applicable codes, as well as federal, state, local or military services laws and regulations.
- These technicians may also be required to plan and conduct various tests, missions or experiments that may require modifications of test items or procedures as well as using subjective judgment to determine test item success or failure.
Job Requirements:
OTHER DUTIES: Duties may require evening or overnight work as well as deployment within CONUS locations. Incumbents may be required to ensure the safety and security of personnel, equipment and information under assigned control or oversee lower-level workers who handle hazardous material/hazardous waste. They may be required to dispatch workers in other classifications to job sites and update supervision of project progress or delays. Provides training and/or work oversight to lesser qualified employees. Other job functions may include general site or range activities support, industrial security, general housekeeping, equipment utilization reporting and other job-related tasks as required.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Incumbent must be able to read, write and communicate clearly and an Associate’s Degree (60 credit hours) in a technical field, such as Engineering, Computer Science, Math, Electronics or Physics or graduate of a technical military service school plus eight years of related experience is required. Twelve years of related experience may be substituted for education requirement. A Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) may be required.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance. Supports E-OMS operational objectives; observes company Quality, Safety, Environmental, Security and Administrative policies; supports Process Improvement. Incumbents in any position are expected to consistently exercise good, independent judgment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work may be performed at various heights above ground level. May perform duties both inside and outside and be subjected to a variety of environmental conditions typical to the work area.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be capable of performing required tasks while using wide variations of physical effort such as sitting, (tracking through telescopes for long durations), running, walking, standing, crawling, climbing, or remaining in awkward, sometimes strained, positions for extended periods of time.
