Position Overview

The Anesthesia Coding Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely coding of hospital-based outpatient anesthesia services. This position supports both clinical and revenue-cycle operations by translating medical documentation into correct billing codes, responding to patient inquiries, and maintaining efficient workflows within Epic.

We seek candidates who are detail-oriented, quality-focused, self-directed, and committed to accuracy, compliance, and collaboration across departments.

Primary Objectives

Ensure accurate anesthesia coding to support clean claim submission and revenue integrity.

Maintain compliance with coding standards, payer rules, and regulatory requirements.

Support physicians, billing teams, and patients through clear communication and reliable workflows.

Operate independently within a high-volume hospital environment while meeting productivity expectations.

Key Responsibilities

Perform daily anesthesia coding using Epic anesthesia billing reports.

Code high volumes of outpatient anesthesia cases with accuracy, consistency, and compliance.

Review prior-day reports and ensure all assigned charts are processed in a timely manner.

Identify and escalate documentation deficiencies when clarification is needed.

Retrieve, distribute, and route physician mail and coding documentation as needed.

Respond to and return patient billing inquiries in a professional manner.

Prepare and route completed coding files to the billing operations team.

Support daily operational workflows within the hospital setting.

Coordinate with clinical and revenue-cycle teams to resolve questions or discrepancies.

Perform occasional administrative tasks in support of practice operations when required.

Maintain strict confidentiality of patient, provider, and organizational information.

Work Environment

Onsite hospital-based role with extensive computer use.

Fast-paced clinical environment requiring focus, organization, and adaptability.

Regular interaction with physicians, hospital staff, and revenue-cycle teams.

This is a full-time, non-exempt, hourly position eligible for overtime in accordance with federal and state law.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications

Certified Professional Coder (CPC).

ICD-10 Certification.

Minimum of five (5) years of anesthesia coding experience.

Demonstrated experience working in Epic is required (formal Epic certification preferred but not required).

Strong knowledge of anesthesia coding, modifiers, and documentation requirements.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.

Professional communication skills with patients, providers, and internal teams.

Preferred Qualifications

Ten (10)+ years of anesthesia coding experience.

Prior experience working onsite in a hospital or ambulatory surgery setting.

Experience with high-volume outpatient anesthesia coding.
