Position Description
The Opportunity House project provides emergency housing for 35 single adults and families. Services are recovery-oriented, trauma-informed and participant-centered. The Cook is responsible for preparing and delivering quality food to participants, taking into consideration dietary requirements. The Cook will adhere to quality assurance policies and procedure while improving the health of participants. The Cook is responsible for purchasing food within budget, managing inventory and soliciting and sorting donations.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions
● Works independently as well as within a team to plan, order/purchase, and prepare nutritious meals for participants. Prepares a hot breakfast and/or snack bags with processed and minimally processed foods.
● Ensures a safe and secure environment and maintains the highest standards of cleanliness and hygiene in accordance with Depaul USA’s quality assurance policies and government regulations.
● Responsible for food preparation, storage and service.
● Produces consistently high-quality food, using fresh ingredients and adapted to the specific dietary needs of the client group. Produces a weekly menu, distributes and publishes menus to staff and participants.
● Works within budget specifications to order food from public and private providers. Maintains records of orders and deliveries. Coordinates donations pick up/drop off with community partners.
● Solicits and picks up donations from community groups including local restaurants and schools.
● Establishes, maintains, and monitors inventory control procedures.
● Assists volunteers, donors and staff in receiving donations of items including moving items to designated spaces and issuing receipts to donors.
● Attends mental health training, first aid/CPR classes, and other training sessions.
● Other duties, as requested by the Supervisor, that may not be listed here.
General Responsibilities
• Adhere to all quality assurance policies and procedures.
• Stay informed of current local and national events, trends, and issues, that impact Depaul USA’s work with homeless individuals.
• Strive continuously to develop the role in collaboration with the supervisor to ensure that all tasks are being undertaken in an effective and appropriate manner, meeting the strategic goals and objectives of Depaul USA.
• Participate in internal/external meetings as required, attend training events, conferences, and other functions as necessary.
• Participate in regular supervision and annual evaluations, identifying his or her own developmental and training needs.
• Ensure adherence to all Depaul USA policies and procedures, particularly those relating to Health and Safety, Safeguarding and the Code of Practice and Confidentiality.
• Contribute to the effective implementation of Depaul USA’s Equal Opportunities Policy as it affects both the organization and its work with this client group.
• Undertake the role in a professional manner maintaining a high-quality standard of work, in accordance with the Vision, Mission and Values of Depaul USA.
Qualifications
The ideal Cook will be a professional with at least two years of food service experience. The Cook should possess the following:
• High school diploma or equivalent certification
• A minimum of two (2) years food service experience in institutional cooking, catering, kitchen and/or food service operations
• ServSafe, Food Handler's Permit or Safe Food Handling certification.
• Knowledge of food safety and sanitation standards.
• Must maintain a high degree of integrity and professionalism.
• Proficiency in cooking techniques and methods.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions. This position typically requires standing or walking for extended periods, occasional sitting, climbing stairs, and lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling items up to 50 pounds. Dexterity of hands and fingers is necessary to operate kitchen equipment and a computer keyboard. The job also involves making and receiving telephone calls, reaching overhead and horizontally, and bending, kneeling, or crouching. Exposure to hazards such as sharp knives, hot surfaces, liquids, and potentially poisonous cleaning chemicals is common. The role may also involve working in various environmental conditions.
Special Requirement
• Must possess a valid driver's license and comply with Depaul USA’s Motor Vehicle Policy during the course of employment. Additionally, occasional use of a personal vehicle may be necessary.

• In person from Opportunity House located at 1305 E. 6th Ave, Pine Bluff, AR 71601.
• Mon-Fri. 4:00-6:30 pm
