Job Title: Quality Control Lab Manager
Department: Quality Control
Reports To: VP, Operations
FLSA Status: Exempt
Position Summary: The incumbent is responsible for leading and managing quality control operations including micro, sensory, analytical and lab staff at two manufacturing sites. Additionally, incumbent will coach and direct the team involved in creating internal specifications, defining testing methods, the inspection of, along with development/implementation/maintenance of quality control procedures with regard to purchased raw materials, in-process materials and finished products to assure quality control standards and Safe Quality Foods (SQF) are achieved at all times.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage all Quality Control operations, including analytical, microbiological, and sensory (organoleptic) testing.
  • Identify continuous improvements and KPI’s to deliver BFI’s brand promise of No Sleepless Nights.
  • Ensure lab compliance with cGMP, GLP, HACCP, SQF, Kosher, FDA USDA, and customer requirements – Partner with SQF Analyst on audits, training and compliance to SQF guidelines.
  • Ensure timely release of raw materials and finished products within established specifications.
  • Develop and/or adapt inspection equipment to meet quality control standards, make suggestions with regard to procedures, standards and equipment to facilitate work and maintain product quality.
  • Proactively partner with R&D to develop internal specifications for raw material, intermediate material and finished good inspections, along with new inspection / testing methods for new specifications, and identification of required equipment, testing protocols, calibration procedures and employee training.
  • Manage staffing and scheduling of the Quality department to meet production, shipping and business needs.
  • Hire, train, coach, and develop the lab team on QC standards, best practices and ways of working and maintain a competency matrix to support skill development and role clarity – Manage non-performance when required.
  • Develop team initiatives, goals and measurable outcomes aligned to big rocks and business strategy.
  • Develop, monitor, and report KPI’s related to QC effectiveness and workload
  • Build internal and external customer relationships including supplier base to create and foster a partnership relative to quality.
  • Investigate and determine cause of faulty work and consult and advise production supervisors as to corrective measures – Train others in root cause analysis to ensure facts drive analytics and decision-making.
  • Analyze facts or circumstances surrounding individual problems to determine what action should be taken within the limits of standard practices.
  • Responsible for food safety standard, compliance, calibration, and for the compilation and maintenance of inspection reports and records.

Qualifications:
  • BS is technical discipline (Food Science, Biology, Chemistry, etc.) along with 3 to 4 years’ experience in managing lab technicians with oversight of QC programs, policies and procedures in a Flavor, Food & Beverage or Ingredient manufacturing site.
  • Strong working knowledge of Kosher, FDA, USDA and food safety regulation.
  • Quality orientation with high attention to detail.
  • Ability to travel once a month to Branchburg, NJ
  • Excellent critical thinking, problem analysis and problem resolution skills along with the ability to think strategically and future state 1-3 years out.
  • A strong role model and leader able to create a cross-functional and supporting team environment.
  • The ability to be hands on and roll up your sleeves is an absolute must
  • Ability to multitask as well as prioritize and handle conflicting priorities
  • Strong verbal, written and presentation communications skills with all levels of the company.

  • Strong organization, planning and prioritization skills
  • Must be self-motivated and results oriented with demonstrated ability to execute and meet deadlines.
  • Must be comfortable make both important and difficult decisions and having confidence in those decisions
  • Solid computer skills – Intermediate to advance level of MS Excel, Word, PPT, and Outlook. Comfortable computers and learning new systems (i.e. Fishbowl, web based systems, etc)
  • Understand and follow SOP’s GMP’s and HACCP’s – demonstrated ability to write, strengthen and getting SOPs, GMPs and HACCP to stick
  • NetSuite and BatchMetrics experience a plus
  • Comfortable with the use of web based systems
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
  • Visual acuity to inspect equipment and materials; ability to read and write SOPs, GMPs and associated business and legislative documentation
  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, occasionally bend and move around the facility. Ability to lift up to 10 pounds
  • Work performed primarily in a laboratory environment and office, with daily trips out to the Production Department where exposed to a manufacturing environment with exposure to odors, fumes, noise and allergens (tree nuts, peanuts, soy, dairy, etc)
  • Must be able to wear all PPEs such as steel-toed shoes, hair nets, safety goggles, lab coats and donn respirator when required.
