About This Position
Reports to Lab Outreach Coordinator and Director of Laboratory. This position obtains specimens in outreach facilities by phlebotomy and assists the outreach processes to include but not limited to pre-registration, order entry, registration and supply management.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Receives requests for laboratory testing from physicians, nursing homes and others and maintains a record of these orders within the LIS.
- Performs pre-registration, verification of insurance, test order entry and completion of registration in the LIS.
- Calls facilities for any corrections or information needed.
- Ensures there is accurate capturing of all necessary patient data and other information to properly bill.
- Resolves issues and helps with scanning documents/orders to the EMR.
- Answers incoming phone calls.
- Collects and properly labels specimens at the beside.
- Processes samples at facilities and transports specimens to hospital.
- Communicates via Doc Halo regarding facility needs (STAT add-on, pickups and supply needs).
- Cancels and reschedules labs unable to obtain.
- Communicates with the outreach facility regarding patient identification, location and rescheduled labs.
- Assures completeness of all test requisitions for the patient names, DOB, diagnosis, room number, date, physician, time and test(s) ordered. In addition, any other relevant orders from the physician or required information for the laboratory must be obtained.
- Follows procedures, including those for sample handling, processing and record keeping.
- Assures the appropriate timing of collections is maintained in the LIS
- Responsible for the knowledge of sample collection practices and specimen stability requirements.
- Monitors expiration dates and supply levels in the department and all outreach facilities.
- Distributes supplies as requested or needed to all facilities.
- Maintains centrifuges located at each outreach facility.
- Monitors dates for annual PM's and troubleshooting when not functioning as expected and transports to and from facility and hospital when necessary.
- Travels throughout Elkhart, St. Joseph and Marshall Counties regardless of conditions other than red flag.
- Observes safety regulations.
- Keeps all patient information confidential.
- Maintains professionalism and courtesy in encounters with patients, visitors, hospital staff and clients, both in actions and appearance.
- Maintains Beacon vehicle in a clean and orderly condition.
- Reports any unusual requests or issues to the Lab Outreach Coordinator.
- Performs assigned tasks under minimal supervision.
- Establishes own work priorities as instructed.
- Follows hospital personnel policies and procedures.
- Participates in continuing education programs.
- Cooperates with fellow associates and outreach facilities' staff to provide quality patient care.
- Reports to work area as scheduled.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Assists the hospital staff phlebotomy team once back onsite.
- Ensures that work is complete and checks with Lab Outreach Coordinator or Lab Technical Specialist before leaving for the day.

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:
- Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
- Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
- Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
- Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
- Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR), and other certifications as required by position/department.
- Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
- Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
- Complies with established organization and department policies.
- Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
- The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of high school diploma (with courses in mathematics and some biological sciences preferred). Minimum of one year of patient care, customer service, general office/clerical or related experience is preferred. Completion of a phlebotomy training program or experience preferred. Qualifies as testing personnel for moderate complexity testing as defined in CFR.493.1423. Must have a valid state issued driver's license and reliable transportation.

- A working knowledge of general phlebotomy methods, practices and procedures is preferred.
Working Conditions
- Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous substances, chemicals and other conditions common to a hospital laboratory.
- Involves travel to various off-site locations for pick up or delivery of specimens or supplies.
- May work variable hours.
Physical Demands
- Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, pushcart/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients up to 25 pounds and lift up to 35 pounds) to perform the essential functions of the position. Also requires visual acuity, normal color perception and full range of body motion, including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
