The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) Substations Program addresses the evolving challenges faced by substation asset owners and operators across the electric power sector. Much of today’s installed substation infrastructure—including transformers, circuit breakers, protection and control systems, gas‑insulated substations, ground grids, arresters, capacitively coupled voltage transformers (CCVTs), batteries and chargers, and high‑voltage direct current (HVDC) substations—was commissioned decades ago and is approaching or exceeding its intended service life.
This role supports EPRI’s research efforts focused on the full life cycle of substation assets, including design, operation, maintenance, aging, and end‑of‑life considerations. The Substation Test Engineer I will contribute to applied research and technical analysis under the guidance of senior engineers and project managers, working closely with internal EPRI staff and supporting industry‑facing projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct technical reviews, literature searches, and data analysis in support of substation research projects
Assist with research activities as directed by the project or task manager, including data collection, testing support, and documentation
Support evaluation, inspection, or testing efforts related to substation equipment and systems
Compile findings and contribute to technical reports, presentations, and internal documentation
Translate field‑level observations into clear technical insights for use by the project team
Collaborate with EPRI technical staff and, as needed, interact administratively with EPRI members
Perform assigned work under general supervision while developing technical proficiency and familiarity with EPRI research processes
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related technical field (or equivalent relevant experience)
Foundational understanding of electrical systems and engineering principles
Ability to analyze technical information and communicate findings clearly in written and verbal formats
Preferred / Ideal Candidate Qualifications:
Hands‑on experience working with electrical equipment, systems, or test environments (laboratory or field-based)
Familiarity with substation infrastructure and components is a strong plus
Experience supporting inspections, field evaluations, commissioning activities, or asset testing
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established technical procedures
Willingness to learn and grow within a collaborative, research-focused environment

The salary range for this position is $68,500 USD to $75,000 USD annually.This salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on various factors, including without limitation applicant's education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location.This role is eligible to participate in EPRI’s annual incentive program.
