Job Title: Painting / Coatings Superintendent – Ship Repair

Location: Seward, Alaska
Job Type: Full-Time

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Painting/Coatings Superintendent to oversee all blasting and coating operations within our ship repair projects. This role is responsible for managing multiple crews and supervisors, ensuring work is completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with all technical specifications and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all painting and coating activities across multiple projects or vessels
  • Supervise and support Painter Supervisors and production crews
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate blasting and painting operations to meet project deadlines
  • Monitor productivity, manpower allocation, and workflow efficiency
  • Ensure compliance with coating specifications, client requirements, and industry standards
  • Oversee quality control processes including surface preparation, application, and inspections (DFT, environmental conditions, etc.)
  • Enforce all safety regulations, including PPE use and confined space procedures
  • Track and control labor hours, material usage, and overall project costs
  • Coordinate with project management, QA/QC teams, and client representatives
  • Manage coating materials, equipment, and vendor relationships
  • Review daily reports and provide progress updates to senior management

Qualifications

  • Minimum eight years of experience in marine coatings, ship repair, or heavy industrial painting
  • Previous experience in a supervisory or superintendent role required
  • Strong knowledge of surface preparation standards (SSPC, NACE/AMPP)
  • Experience with marine coating systems (epoxy, polyurethane, anti-fouling, ballast tank coatings)
  • Ability to read and interpret technical specifications and drawings
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and confined space regulations
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • NACE / AMPP Coating Inspector certification (Level 1 or higher)
  • Experience working in shipyards or drydock environments
  • Familiarity with IMO and classification society requirements
