This is a temporary to permanent, hybrid role in located San Diego, California.

The Ascent Student Loan Underwriter is responsible for the income calculation and review of new student loan application requests in a paperless environment. Underwriters work closely with Customer Service Representatives and Loan Processors to ensure the accurate and timely underwriting of Ascent Student Loans.

This position is a temporary to permanent contract position located in Downtown San Diego. The hours are flexible and can include nights and weekends as needed. Ascent offers a hybrid working schedule with two to three days required in the office.

In This Role, You Will:

  • Review student loan credit applications and render an appropriate credit decision within credit policy requirements and in compliance with all regulations.
  • Review and verify the accuracy of credit reports and borrower provided documents and identify red flags within the documentation.
  • Provide prompt, accurate communication and responses to all internal and external customer inquiries as it relates to income and credit scenarios, documentation requirements, and the loan underwriting process.
  • Calculate self-employed, retirement, and wage earners for prospective borrowers.
  • Collaborate on operational processes across multiple departments.
Requirements:
  • Four years of loan underwriting experience, student loan underwriting experience desired.
  • Experience working with income documents and income calculations.
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting credit bureau reports on a tradeline basis.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • PC literate with good computer skills and a working knowledge of common business and application software.

Compensation & Schedule:

  • Compensation includes an hourly rate of $24-26 per hour
  • Commuter monthly allowance
  • Hybrid work flexibility (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in office)
  • Must be flexible with schedule and have weekend availability
