Job Description:
The City of Chesapeake is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to join the medical staff at Chesapeake Juvenile Services. The LPN will provide essential nursing care to juvenile residents, ensuring their physical health needs are met in accordance with medical standards and the regulations set forth by the Virginia Board of Nursing. The position operates under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Medical Doctor and is vital to the day-to-day healthcare operations within the facility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Collect and manage sick call slips from housing units during assigned shifts.
  • Triage residents to evaluate the necessity for treatment.
  • Administer medications to residents as prescribed by the physician.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of medical supplies and prescription medications.
  • Monitor residents during medication administration and report any adverse reactions to the supervising nurse.
  • Interpret physician instructions for residents and address any questions they may have concerning their medical treatment.
  • Respond effectively to emergencies while practicing within the scope of LPN licensure as defined by the Virginia Board of Nursing.
  • Conduct chart audits and ensure the timely resupply of chart forms as necessary.
  • Document nursing notes promptly, including Medication Administration Records (MARS).

Required Qualifications:
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Requires a diploma in practical nursing.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of one year of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
  • Requires licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse by the Commonwealth of Virginia or a reciprocal state (according to the Nurse Licensure Compact as prescribed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing).
  • Requires certification in CPR, Multi-media First Aid, and Handle With Care.
  • May require a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with the City’s Driving Standards.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.


Preferred Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited Practical Nursing Program in Virginia or a compact state.
- A comprehensive understanding of nursing practices, procedures, emergency protocols, and medication administration.
- Demonstrated ability to apply established nursing protocols and standing orders effectively.
- Capacity to consult with Registered Nurses or Medical Doctors as needed.
- Consistent follow-through in providing direct care to patients as indicated.
- Accurate transcription and implementation of physician orders in their entirety.

Special Certifications:
- Current CPR, BLS, and First Aid certifications.
- Relevant experience in delivering clinical care within secure environments, ambulatory care settings, or public health, particularly involving pediatric and adolescent patients.
