About This Position

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Director of Campus Safety, the Campus Safety Officer is a member of a team of safety officers who are responsible for providing personal safety for members of the campus community through a courteous, helpful and professional manner. This position provides a highly visual deterrent to campus crime while protecting the property and assets of the University. This is a non-sworn position.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The essential duties, responsibilities, and functions of the Campus Safety Officer include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Providing security for persons, buildings, and assets of the University through a variety for
  • Responding to requests for assistance and information in a helpful and courteous manner.
  • Patrolling the grounds and facilities in a manner consistent with the Department, University Policy, and Mission.
  • Enforcing appropriate University regulations and policies including but not limited to parking and traffic regulations.
  • Routine involvement in directing vehicular or pedestrian traffic in a variety of situations.
  • Assisting designated Campus Safety Officers in their campus law enforcement duties.
  • General knowledge of data entry and other technical skills.
  • Position may require evening or weekend hours.
  • Represents the University at meetings with University employees and/or external persons and agencies as required.
  • Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency.
SUPERVISORY DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND FUNCTIONS

The Campus Safety Officer may supervise interns and/or student workers. The Campus Safety Officer carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the University’s policies and applicable laws.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to demonstrate good judgment in enforcing University regulations and security policies and practices, while maintaining confidentiality in all security matters.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • High degree of tact and diplomacy dealing with the University community under a variety of difficult situations.
  • Sensitivity toward the cultural diversity of the campus community.
  • Ability and willingness to work hourly rotating shifts.
  • Physically fit to withstand the challenges of extensive walking and climbing and descending numerous interior and external stairs and campus grounds including multi-level building facilities, and parking lots.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. This position can be physically demanding job and generally requirements of being able to walk, run, climb multiple staircases, bend, stoop and carry 40 pounds at minimum. (Able to complete the patrol circuit in 90 minutes.) Normal responsibilities should not afford risks of accidental injury.

This position requires equipment typically used in a modern office environment, including personal computers, calculators, copiers, and fax machines.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the duties, responsibilities, and functions of this job. This position has no specific working conditions; the work environment is typical to that of a small private residential institution of higher education, with physical remote site locations within 500 miles of the main campus in Bluefield, Virginia.
