About This Position
This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Director of Engineering, Upstart Bank in the United States.
This is a high-impact engineering leadership role responsible for building and scaling the core technology foundation of a modern, regulated banking platform from the ground up. The position sits at the intersection of fintech innovation, regulatory infrastructure, and large-scale distributed systems, with a mission to enable a unified banking framework that improves access to credit nationwide. The role involves defining both technical strategy and organizational structure while leading the creation of systems that support ledgering, payments, deposits, funding, integrations, and financial reporting. It requires close collaboration with cross-functional partners across Product, Compliance, Legal, Risk, Finance, and Operations to ensure reliability, auditability, and regulatory alignment. Operating in a highly dynamic environment, the role demands both architectural depth and strong people leadership to build and scale engineering teams. This is a rare opportunity to shape the foundation of a next-generation banking platform rather than evolve legacy systems.
- Build and scale the engineering organization for the banking platform, growing from a seed team into a multi-team structure with strong technical leadership.
- Define and execute the technical strategy and architecture for core banking systems, including ledgering, funding, deposits, payments, integrations, and reporting platforms.
- Design the organizational structure and hiring strategy, building a high-performing engineering leadership bench.
- Partner with Product and cross-functional leaders to translate business, regulatory, and operational needs into scalable engineering solutions and delivery plans.
- Own end-to-end delivery of critical banking infrastructure, ensuring reliability, scalability, performance, and operational excellence.
- Establish engineering standards, controls, and development practices that support security, auditability, traceability, and compliance requirements.
- Lead execution across complex dependencies involving Compliance, Legal, Risk, Finance, and Operations teams.
- Build systems and processes that enable internal controls, audits, and regulatory-grade operational resilience.
- Develop engineering managers and technical leaders while fostering a strong culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 10+ years of engineering experience, including at least 5+ years in engineering management roles.
- Proven experience building and scaling engineering organizations through growth or foundational stages.
- Strong background in distributed systems, cloud architecture, and large-scale platform engineering.
- Experience leading engineering teams in regulated, high-control environments requiring strong reliability and auditability standards.
- Demonstrated ability to define technical strategy and architectural direction for mission-critical systems.
- Experience collaborating with senior executives and cross-functional leaders on complex business platforms.
- Strong understanding of financial systems or fintech domains is highly preferred (payments, ledgering, deposits, or funding systems).
- Ability to hire, develop, and retain high-performing engineering talent in competitive environments.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to align technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Competitive compensation including base salary, performance bonuses, and annual equity grants
- Salary range: $228,300 – $315,900 USD (depending on location and experience)
- Generous 401(k) with strong employer matching contributions
- Employee stock purchase plan with discounted stock options
- Comprehensive health coverage (medical, dental, vision) with high employer contribution
- Paid parental leave and family support programs
- Mental health, wellness, and employee assistance resources
- Flexible remote-first work model with periodic in-person team gatherings
- Annual wellness and productivity allowances for personal development and work optimization
- Financial planning tools and retirement support resources
- Strong learning and development ecosystem (mentorship, courses, training platforms)
- Inclusive and collaborative culture with regular team events and engagement opportunities.
