Job Overview

By-Tor Contracting Inc. is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Bookkeeper/Accountant to manage daily accounting functions and support the financial health of our growing contracting business. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with QuickBooks (or similar accounting software) and a strong understanding of bookkeeping practices within the construction or home improvement industry. This role involves maintaining accurate financial records, preparing reports, reconciling accounts, processing payroll, and coordinating with project managers to ensure job costing accuracy. Youll work closely with leadership to track budgets, manage accounts payable/receivable, and streamline financial workflows that support the companys continued growth and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate general ledger and financial records in QuickBooks (or comparable accounting software)

  • Manage accounts payable and receivable; ensure timely vendor payments, client invoicing, and collections

  • Process payroll and maintain accurate employee files and benefits tracking

  • Reconcile bank and credit card accounts monthly

  • Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements, profit and loss summaries, balance sheets, and job cost reports

  • Track and monitor project budgets, purchase orders, and job-specific expenses

  • Collaborate with project managers to verify change orders, support billing accuracy, and resolve discrepancies

  • Manage and update vendor and subcontractor records, ensuring insurance certificates, W-9s, and compliance documentation are current

  • Prepare and file sales tax reports, 1099s, and business licenses

  • Assist with inventory tracking and materials costing for millwork, carpentry, and door installation projects

  • Support year-end closing activities, journal entries, audits, and tax preparation in coordination with the company CPA

  • Develop and improve internal accounting procedures to enhance efficiency and accuracy

  • Generate financial reports as needed to support leadership and operational decision-making

  • Maintain confidentiality of all company financial and employee information

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of bookkeeping/accounting experience

  • Proficiency with QuickBooks (Desktop or Online) and Microsoft Excel

  • Strong understanding of job costing and construction billing methods

  • Excellent attention to detail, time management, and organization

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills

  • Construction industry knowledge is a plus but not required

  • A notary certification is a bonus

  • Social Media knowledge a plus
