Registered Respiratory Therapist Option 2

Job Summary

This position provides daily respiratory care activities. These duties include maintaining airway management; assisting with intubations, patient assessments and implementation of protocols and physician ordered therapy. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Associate’s degree.
  • A current Indiana RCP License and the credential as Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or within nine months of hire past graduation date.
  • Requires graduation from a CoARC (Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care) and regionally accredited respiratory care program.
  • CPR certification or must obtain at next available class upon hire. Other advance life support may be required by unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.

Preferred Job Requirements

  • ACLS; PALS; and/or NRP certification
  • ACCS, NPS, CPFT/RPFT, AE-C certifications
  • 3-5 years’ experience working in acute care

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of cardiopulmonary anatomy and physiology.
  • Ability to apply theoretical and technical knowledge in effort to deliver the appropriate respiratory care.
  • Active participation in COPD and asthma education.
  • Active participation in the discharge planning of chronic pulmonary patients.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively and tactfully communicate with patients and their families and guests, co-workers, managers, providers and other hospital personnel on a one-to-one basis using appropriate grammar, vocabulary and word usage.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to carry out duties in a professional manner, as well as the ability to work well under stress.
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to work in the EMR and proficiently perform computer applications related to department operations and job function.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Strong organizational skills in order to manage multiple issues simultaneously combined with ability to effectively prioritize.
  • Ability to be discreet and protect the integrity of any confidential matter or information encountered during the performance of job duties.

Working Conditions

  • Typical hospital clinical environment with frequent standing and walking.
  • Work may be subject to interruptions and occasional high stress levels.
  • Risk for occupational exposure to blood, body fluid and other potentially infectious, electrical and radiation hazards.
  • Works with protected health information.
  • Works in close proximity to patients and visitors.
  • Ability to work any shift, occasional extended hours, holidays and/or weekends based on the needs of the department.

Physical and Mental Activities, Tools and Equipment

  • Knowledge and use of standard Respiratory Care equipment (e.g. ventilators, incentive spirometry, bedside spirometry, point of care blood gas analyzers)
  • Attention to detail with 95% degree of accuracy in patient documentation for point of care service.
  • Standing, walking, stooping, bending, lifting, pushing and pulling to provide patient care and to utilize paient care devices necessary to perform duties in a safe manner.
  • Uses computers and other standard office equipment.
  • Lifting supplies and equipment typically found in clinical patient care areas.
  • Operates equipment typically found in patient rooms.
