Position Summary:

The Governance Manager at AIUM is responsible for overseeing the organization's governance operations, including managing committee appointments, board meetings, and leadership processes. This role ensures alignment with AIUM's policies and best practices while supporting the Communities of Practice (COP) program. Additionally, the Governance Manager will work with staff liaisons and relevant committees to project manage AIUM's practice parameter and guideline document process, ensuring steady progress across multiple documents. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational and communication skills, working closely with leadership, volunteers, and staff to enhance governance efficiency and engagement.

Responsibilities:

Governance Oversight & Support

  • Manage the overall governance system, ensuring alignment with AIUM's policies and best practices.
  • Oversee the appointment process for committees, boards, and leadership roles, including elections and conflict of interest disclosures.
  • Assist in scheduling and coordinating the Board of Governors (triannual meetings) and Executive Committee (monthly meetings), working with the President and CEO to develop agendas.
  • Provide governance-related guidance and training to staff liaisons and committee members.
  • Optionally assist in AIUM's ongoing bylaw revision process (experience with bylaws is a plus but not required).
  • Work with staff liaisons and relevant committees to project manage the practice parameter and guideline document development process, ensuring steady progress on a few dozen documents.

Communities of Practice (COP) Program Management

  • Act as the main point of contact for COP leaders, supporting engagement, communication, and program improvements.
  • Assist in strategizing and implementing enhancements to the program for increased participation and effectiveness.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Ensure governance best practices are upheld across AIUM committees and leadership structures.
  • Collaborate with staff and leadership across various departments, particularly membership and guidelines, to ensure smooth operations of AIUM's governance-related activities.
  • May serve as a staff liaison to a small number of committees as needed.
  • May guide presidential task forces and other special executive initiatives.
  • Attend virtually monthly Executive Committee calls, triannual Board meetings, and any other necessary governance events.
  • Attend AIUM's annual conference in person, as well as other key meetings or events as required.
  • Other duties as assigned by the CEO.

Education/Knowledge/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in governance, nonprofit management, healthcare associations, or related fields.
  • Experience in an association or professional society is strongly preferred, with an understanding of governance structures, committees, and appointment processes.
  • Familiarity with an Association Management System (AMS) is a plus.

Skills:

  • Strong organizational skills – ability to manage multiple committees, appointments, and deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills – able to work effectively with volunteers, leadership, and staff.
  • Project management abilities – comfortable juggling multiple governance-related initiatives.
  • Familiarity with elections, appointment processes, and conflict of interest disclosures is a plus.
  • Proactive and strategic thinker – particularly in improving governance structures and COP engagement. Innovative and a self-starter, with the ability to bring fresh perspectives to AIUM's governance processes. This role offers significant opportunities to introduce new ideas and own improvements to the governance ecosystem.
  • Experience or ability to project manage complex document processes, ensuring smooth progress and coordination across multiple stakeholders.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt – the CEO will mentor the right candidate in any areas where additional knowledge is needed.

Other:

  • Remote-first organization with an option to work in our Laurel, MD office (this policy may evolve).
  • Required travel to AIUM's annual conference and potentially other events.
  • Compensation: $70,000-85,000 based on experience.
