About This Position
Job Summary:
The Product Design Engineer is responsible for the full lifecycle of product development, including conceptualization, prototyping, testing, documentation, and production support. This role requires hands-on collaboration with engineering teams, shop personnel, and leadership to develop innovative solutions that align with manufacturing and market demands. The position also requires ongoing evaluation and continuous improvement of existing products.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Product Innovation & Design:
· Develop new product designs in collaboration with senior engineers, leadership, and production teams.
· Translate ideas into detailed 3D models and technical drawings using CAD software (Autodesk Inventor preferred).
· Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles to ensure cost-effective and efficient production.
· Research materials, components, and manufacturing processes to optimize performance, durability, and cost-effectiveness.
Prototyping & Testing:
· Work directly with shop personnel to build and test prototypes, using a mix of standard and custom-fabricated parts.
· Apply metal fabrication, welding, machining, and assembly knowledge to resolve design and fit issues.
· Utilize 3D printing, power tools, and manual fabrication techniques for hands-on product development.
· Conduct functional testing and iterate on designs to improve performance and manufacturability.
Process Development & Documentation:
· Develop and maintain engineering-grade documentation, including:
o 2D & 3D technical drawings with full GD&T.
o Bills of Materials (BOMs) and part lists.
o Engineering Change Orders (ECOs/ECNs).
o Testing procedures and results.
o Work instructions, SOPs, and assembly procedures.
· Identify opportunities for process improvements in product development and manufacturing workflows.
Existing Product Support & Continuous Improvement:
· Evaluate existing products to identify areas for cost reduction, improved performance, and manufacturability.
· Troubleshoot customer complaints and product failures, diagnosing root causes and recommending corrective actions.
· Collaborate with Production, Quality, and Service teams to resolve field and assembly issues.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
· Work with Manufacturing, Sales, and Marketing to ensure products align with market demands and customer expectations.
· Communicate with vendors and suppliers to explore new materials and components for cost and performance improvements.
· Provide hands-on support during first-run builds and production rollouts.
Other Responsibilities:

· Maintain a clean and organized workspace in both office and shop environments.
· Comply with company safety policies and procedures, ensuring a safe work environment.
· Attend meetings, training sessions, and other company activities as required.
· Perform any other duties as assigned by management, including tasks outside of the core job scope when necessary to meet business needs.
Qualifications:
Required:
· Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field.
· 5+ years of experience in mechanical design, R&D, or product development (preferably in industrial equipment or machinery).
· Expertise in 3D CAD software (Autodesk Inventor preferred; SolidWorks, Solid Edge, or Unigraphics considered).
· Strong knowledge of metal fabrication, welding, machining, and finishing processes.
· Ability to read, interpret, and create complex technical drawings with GD&T application.
· Hands-on experience using power tools, hand tools, and fabrication equipment during prototyping.
· Understanding of engineering processes, ECOs/ECNs, and technical documentation standards.
· Strong technical writing skills for documenting designs, procedures, and test results.
Preferred:
· Experience in Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
· Work experience in a machine shop, welding shop, or fabrication environment.
· Basic electrical knowledge (circuit understanding, wiring skills).
· Familiarity with PLC programming, motor controls, and HMI interfaces.
· Experience with NSF, UL, or other product certification processes.

Physical Requirements:
· Ability to lift and move objects up to 50 lbs.
· Comfortable working in both office and shop environments.
· Able to use fabrication tools (drills, saws, grinders, welders, etc.) as needed during prototyping.
Work Environment:
· Primarily in an office setting, with frequent time in R&D labs and the production floor.
· Exposure to manufacturing processes, machinery, and noise levels common in a shop environment.
· Occasional travel may be required for supplier visits, customer support, or industry events.
Schedule
· Monday - Friday 8 AM - 5 PM
Pay
· Starting at $85,000/year
