About This Position

Job Summary

The Detailer/Buffer/Touch-Up Tech is responsible for the final cosmetic finishing of vehicles following collision repair. This role ensures that repaired surfaces are polished to match the original factory finish, minor paint imperfections are addressed, and the entire vehicle is cleaned to a showroom-ready standard. The technician must possess a keen eye for detail, expertise in paint finishing techniques, and an ability to work efficiently under tight deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Buffing & Polishing: Use high-speed orbital buffers and polishers to remove sanding marks, scratches, swirls, and haze from repaired panels.
  • Paint Correction & Touch-Up: Apply, blend, and polish touch-up paint to minor chips, scratches, and nicks.
  • Surface Preparation: Mask off areas, perform wet sanding, and prepare surfaces for polishing.
  • Final Inspection: Inspect all finished surfaces to ensure they are free of defects (runs, sags, overspray) and meet or exceed quality standards before delivery.
  • Vehicle Detailing: Thoroughly clean vehicle exteriors (washing, waxing, buffing) and interiors (vacuuming, shampooing carpets, cleaning glass, dressing leather/vinyl).
  • Facility Maintenance: Maintain a clean, organized work area and ensure all equipment (buffers, hoses) is kept in good working condition.
  • Documentation: Complete quality control sheets on every vehicle, accurately recording work performed.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Experience: Previous experience as an automotive detailer, buffer, or in a collision center reconditioning department is strongly preferred (often 1–2 years).
  • Skills: Proficiency in using orbital polishers, sanders, and other power tools. Knowledge of different automotive paint types, polishing compounds, and waxes.
  • Attention to Detail: Exceptional ability to identify and correct minute surface imperfections.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to stand for long periods, walk, bend, kneel, and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Licensing: Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
