About This Position
Position Summary:
Pullman Market, a vibrant culinary destination celebrated for its farm-to-table commitment, is seeking an enthusiastic and detail-oriented Wine & Beer Team Lead to join our esteemed team.
As an integral part of our wine and beer section, you will ensure the department is adequately stocked while maintaining high levels of cleanliness, organization, and presentation standards. Your exceptional customer service skills will be essential as you interact with guests on the sales floor, providing product knowledge, recommendations, and elevated hospitality that enhances the overall shopping experience.
In addition to these core responsibilities, the Wine & Beer Team Lead serves as the primary owner of the beer and wine category. This role supports the Retail Manager in daily operations specific to the department and is responsible for overseeing ordering, inventory management, merchandising, and regulatory compliance related to beer and wine.
The Wine & Beer Team Lead also provides on-the-floor leadership to team members within the department, ensuring standards are upheld, processes are followed, and guest service remains a top priority. This position combines hands-on execution with operational oversight to ensure a best-in-class wine and beer experience within the market.
You will also complete additional duties as assigned by the management team, contributing to the seamless operation of Pullman Market.
Responsibilities:
- Beer & Wine Category Ownership
- Manage beer & wine ordering, including vendor relationships, purchase orders, and product receiving.
- Maintain accurate inventory records and ensure timely invoice processing.
- Ensure compliance with TABC laws, including staff training and guest transactions.
- Work with the Retail Manager and Wine/Bar Directors to plan promotions, tastings, seasonal features, and events.
- Maintain merchandising standards: attractive displays, proper rotation, and accurate pricing.
- Provide staff and guests with product knowledge, ensuring education and engagement.
- Leading the Wine and Beer Team (selling, educating, and hospitality/guest relations, etc.)
- Helps management analyze financial data and develops strategies to increase efficiencies and drive sales
- Assist Wine and Bar Director with new beverage selections.
- Promote beverage education, growing the team’s confidence with production, styles, terms, and profiles.
- Grow relationships with vendors, reaching out for demos/samples/etc.
- Uphold proper stocking, sanitation, and rotation practices in wine and beer sections.
- Educate customers on product offerings and make recommendations based on knowledge of categories.
- Ensures the team always offers a consistent, high level of service to all guests
- Checking product quality and freshness upon receiving. Reporting any issues to management/sourcing.
- Offer friendly, knowledgeable, efficient and courteous service to customers by providing them with current market offerings and product information.
- Engage with customers on the sales floor, delivering top-notch service and guidance.
- Perform other assigned tasks to support the overall function of the market.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned
- Assist the Retail Manager in organizing and directing all retail areas to maximize profitability while maintaining company standards.
- Supervise, train, and support hourly team members across multiple departments.
- Provide on-the-floor leadership to ensure cleanliness, safety, and efficiency.
- Support merchandising and product presentation standards across all departments.
- Support department leads with staffing and scheduling needs.
- Carry out additional responsibilities related to all retail market functions as assigned by the General Manager of Retail.
- Cash Handling & Compliance
- Oversee front end operations, including registers, cash handling, and accurate transactions.
- Monitor adherence to safety, sanitation, and company policies across the store.
Complete daily operational reports and communicate with the Retail Manager. - Team & Culture
- Model Pullman Market’s mission and values while fostering a positive, team-oriented workplace.
- Encourage staff development through cross-training and wine/beer knowledge-building.
- Promote a strong culture of guest engagement and hospitality.
Requirements:
- 2+ years retail, grocery, or hospitality leadership experience preferred.
- Minimum of CMS Level 1 or WSET Level 2
- Experience with ordering and vendor management in beer/wine or specialty retail is highly preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
- A genuine passion for locally sourced products and culinary offerings is advantageous.
Working Conditions:
- A typical work week for this position is 30-40 hours. Hours vary based on needs of the market and department.
- This role involves prolonged standing, bending, stooping, twisting, lifting objects up to 45 pounds, and repetitive hand and wrist movements.
- Exposure to hot, cold, and potentially hazardous equipment is possible.
- Familiarity with office equipment such as phones, computers, fax machines, and copiers may be required.
