Director of Protein Procurement

This leadership role is responsible for managing the end-to-end procurement of proteins, ensuring quality, cost efficiency, and supplier performance align with organizational objectives. The Director of Protein Procurement will lead strategic sourcing initiatives, develop and maintain strong supplier relationships, and collaborate cross-functionally with R&D, Quality, and Operations teams to support innovation and product development. The role involves analyzing market trends, mitigating supply risks, and driving improvements in procurement processes. This position offers the opportunity to influence business strategy, optimize costs, and contribute to high-quality product offerings. The ideal candidate will combine deep knowledge of human-grade protein supply chains with strong leadership and negotiation skills, working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.

Accountabilities:
  • Develop and implement multi-year strategic sourcing plans to optimize Total Cost of Ownership while maintaining product quality and supply continuity.

  • Manage supplier relationships, including performance monitoring, contract negotiation, and network planning for capacity and risk diversification.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain) to support product innovation, resolve supplier issues, and ensure On Time In Full delivery and quality standards.

  • Conduct market research and analyze supply dynamics to inform procurement strategies, mitigate risks, and identify growth opportunities.

  • Lead improvement initiatives in procurement processes, including Procure-to-Pay workflows, leveraging ERP systems for efficiency and accuracy.

  • Mentor and guide team members, promoting a collaborative and results-driven culture.

Requirements:

  • 7+ years of experience in procurement, category management, or strategic sourcing, preferably in human-grade meat, poultry, or seafood supply chains.

  • Proven expertise in managing market volatility and executing forward buys, formula pricing, and index-based contracts (Urner Barry, USDA reports).

  • Deep understanding of international logistics, customs, tariffs, and USDA/FDA import regulations for protein sourcing.

  • Strong negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills with suppliers and internal stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver cost savings, drive cross-functional initiatives, and optimize procurement processes.

  • Passion for pets and alignment with organizational mission and values is highly desirable.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Business, Food Science, or related field; advanced degree a plus.
