The Role:
Reporting to the Director, Facilities and Operations, the Junior Building Operator will assist with operating and maintaining the School’s HVAC, building automation, life safety, fire, water and sanitary maintenance systems. This position supports the Facilities and Operations team to ensure that NBS provides a safe, welcoming, comfortable, accessible and clean environment for its students, employees, guests and activities.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Implement and support preventative maintenance programs in collaboration with the Director, Facilities and Operations and the Senior Building Operator. This includes reviewing manufacturer guidelines, analyzing maintenance reports, ensuring compliance with operational standards, and coordinating the scheduling of contractors as needed
  • Perform preventative and routine maintenance of the building systems e.g. HVAC system, building automation system, fire and life safety system, water treatment system and sanitary and storm sewer system
  • Perform scheduled back-up generator tests by following instructions and schedules and maintaining records of results
  • Assist with ensuring all systems are operated and maintained in a manner that meets all codes, regulations, and legal requirements
  • Assist and liaise with mechanical, control and water treatment contract technicians by providing necessary information
  • Maintain all mechanical rooms in a clean and tidy condition by following good housekeeping practices
  • Comply with all health and safety requirements
  • Perform other duties as required to achieve the objectives of the Facilities and Operations department
  • All other duties as assigned
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Technical knowledge and skills in the operation and maintenance of: HVAC, Building Automation, Fire and Life Safety, Water Treatment, Sanitary and Storm Sewer and Mechanical and Electrical systems
  • 2 years’ experience in a professional environment
  • Understanding of current energy management strategies
  • Sound knowledge of relevant health and safety regulations and procedures
  • Purchasing skills and the ability to effectively manage projects related to the department
  • Knowledge and ability to safely operate power tools; physically capable of lifting and/or moving heavy objects
  • Ability to work in varied environments and the flexibility to deal with changing priorities
  • Knowledge of Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Good oral and written communication skills; ability to deal diplomatically with colleagues, staff and the public
  • A diploma in a related field is considered an asset

Compensation
Salary Range:
$40,000 - $42,000 annually, commensurate with experience and aligned with internal equity.
