Job Title: EKG/Stress Lab Technician
Department: Medical Imaging
Location: Massena Hospital
Hours Per Week: Per Diem - As needed
Schedule: Per Diem - Variable between 7 am - 4 pm M-F


SUMMARY:

The EKG Technician is responsible for performing electrocardiogram (EKG) procedures in both laboratory and bedside settings to support accurate cardiac diagnostics and patient care. This role ensures timely scheduling and completion of tests based on clinical urgency, prepares and maintains patient records, and monitors patients throughout procedures to ensure safety and quality results.

The EKG Technician maintains equipment functionality, manages departmental documentation and supply inventory, and supports billing and reporting processes. Additional responsibilities include assisting with department operations, maintaining a safe and organized work environment, supporting quality improvement initiatives, and providing guidance to new team members as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Receives notification of the physician's orders for EKG. Schedules, or assists in scheduling, tests, considering clinical urgency, workload, etc.

  • Abstracts relevant information from the patient's clinical record. Explains procedure to patient and may obtain additional pertinent information from patient prior to or during test.

  • Obtains recordings in the EKG Laboratory or at the patient's bedside by attaching leads as required. Observes patient's condition during test and records artifacts such as coughing, radio interference, etc., which may affect the interpretation of the test. Remains alert to evidence of medical emergency and obtains immediate assistance.

  • Prepares folders for patients who have not had previous EKG's in the hospital. Files report copies in the department and in the patient's chart, or forward to Medical Records.

  • Types physician interpretation of test results for cardiograms not utilizing computer support

  • Prepares slips to record patient charges.

  • Maintains equipment by performing routine cleaning. Recognizes signs of equipment or computer malfunction and corrects or refers to a supervisor for a service call.

  • Assists in maintaining department files. May type letters, reports, records, etc.

  • Maintains work area in a safe, clean, orderly manner and applies safe work practices to all activities.

  • Maintains regular inventory of EKG supplies and initiates timely supply requisitions following established procedure.

  • Answers and places telephone calls, giving and receiving information.

  • Maintains logs of tests completed and prepares statistical reports.

  • Assists in orienting new employees to job responsibilities as requested by the supervisor.

  • Participates in the performance improvement efforts of the hospital. Produces and monitors related department quality indicators.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Technical aptitude required to interpret physicians' orders, utilize an electrocardiograph, maintain records, etc. This level of general development is normally acquired through a high school education, or equivalent, with six (6) months of related experience.

  • Requires a moderate to high level of interpersonal skills to interact with patients and deal effectively with medical, nursing, technical, and other staff members.

  • Requires one to three months of orientation and on-the-job training to become familiar with position duties, methods and techniques, and departmental policies and procedures. The ability to learn the performance of electrocardiograms on neonatal patients is required.

  • Requires light typing ability to produce simple reports, letters, records, etc.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Preferred completion of a rhythm recognition course.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology. Experience performing EKG, Stress Testing, or Cardiac Rehabilitation

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.

PAY RANGE: $20.18 - $27.29

The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for successful applicants. It may be modified in the future. Pay is determined by factors including experience, clinical licensure date, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts.
