Position Summary

The Emergency Department Unit Clerk supports efficient department operations by calling all physician consults, placing patients on Teletracking for appropriate inpatient placement, scanning documents into patient charts, and answering all phone lines within three rings while directing calls appropriately. The Unit Clerk is trained to recognize abnormal cardiac monitor alarms, promptly reporting them to nursing staff, respond to all patient call bells and relay needs to the appropriate staff, request prior medical records from outside facilities, and assist during downtime. Additional responsibilities include placing work orders, arranging both in-house and EMS transports, maintaining PAR levels of supplies and forms, and maintaining an organized work environment.

Core Job Functions
- Supports Director in maintenance of calendar, documents and files. Collates data for operational budget and other financials. Maintains office protocols.
- Call lights and phones are answered in an efficient and professional manner and messages are communicated to the appropriate person. Work area is kept organized and clean.
- Communicates with internal and external customers in a professional, timely manner. Accurately transcribe orders and enters departmental charges day of procedure.
- Observes cardiac monitors for abnormal rhythms and rates and reports to nursing staff. Ensures all patients are placed on monitor upon arrival to the floor and places rhythm strip on patient's chart per guidelines. Accurately identifies lethal arrhythmias and initiates appropriate alert.
- Complies with regulatory guidelines for work area and professional practice. Communicates safety risk to other providers. Facilitates system/ department in obtaining appropriate reimbursement/ revenue.
- Monitors departmental inventory, supplies and equipment for needs, waste and/or malfunction. Maintains clean work area. Creates and maintains patient charts and paperwork from admission to discharge.
