About This Position

Established in 1926, Family Service League is a social services agency transforming lives and communities through mental health, addiction, housing, and essential human services with more than 60 social service programs in over 20 locations.

SCHEDULE:

Monday - Friday, 11am - 7pm

SUMMARY:

Family Service League is seeking a full-time Recreational Aide to work in our family shelter in Brentwood, NY. The Recreational Aide assists the lead teachers with all educational, recreational, and enrichment programs for children and family members residing in emergency housing. The Recreational Aide offers guidance and support to families, works to foster a positive, strength-based environment, and provides related safety monitoring and supervises children as they return home from school each afternoon.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • The Recreational Aide will provide direct interaction and support to children and families residing in emergency housing to build upon strengths and resources.
    • Assist with planning, organization, and delivery of programs and events that meet developmental, intellectual, physical, social-emotional, and recreational needs of children of all ages.
    • Develop written lesson plans correlating to programs and activities offered.
    • The Recreational Aide will provide enrichment and work towards building good character and positive self-esteem in clients.
    • Practice excellent supervision and monitor skills pertaining to the safety of children.
    • Assume bus duties to ensure all children returning from school and camp are adequately supervised.
    • Contribute to a monthly department activities calendar that ensures a balance of programs for children of all ages, gender, and cultural backgrounds.
    • The Recreational Aide will prepare room for activities and programs and clean-up program materials.
    • Ensure play areas and activity centers are cleaned, well maintained and safe at all times.
    • Maintain and instruct children in keeping good hygiene.
    • Change the diapers of infants and toddlers.
    • The Recreational Aide will adhere to identified schedules and routines.
    • Maintain meticulous record keeping and maintain current, accurate, and confidential client records.
    • Work closely with program staff to implement and maintain program performance standards.
    • Set and observe appropriate boundaries with clients; observe client confidentiality and HIPPA protocols.
    • The Recreational Aide will provide crisis intervention.
    • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
    • This position is essential to the safe and continuous operation of the program. Essential employees are expected to report to work during inclement weather and other relevant emergency situations to ensure uninterrupted care and support for clients.
    • All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma required, bachelor’s degree preferred.

At least two years of childcare experience required.

Must possess the ability to work with adults and children of all ages and demonstrate knowledge of and sensitivity to the needs and interests of underserved communities.

Excellent interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills required.

Strong organizational and time management skills required.

Must have ability to work independently and as part of multi-disciplinary team.

Must maintain a professional manner and appearance and have the ability to prioritize workload while remaining flexible.

Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires sitting and standing for extended periods of time, as well as moderate lifting up to 10-15 pounds. Must be able to go up and down stairs.
