Position Summary:
The Department of Anthropologyat the University of New Mexico is leading a series of field study projectsdesigned to advance the field of architectural conservation and archaeologicalsites management. Field study projects focus on archaeological and historicstructures in the American Southwest and create opportunities for students toparticipate in the documentation, assessment, and conservation of some of thenation's most treasured cultural sites. Projects involve archival research, documentation(archaeological illustration, photography) materials analysis, conditionsurvey, nondestructive evaluation, conservation treatment, and site managementplanning. Student participants will work directly with experiencedconservators, archaeologists, engineers, artists, preservation craftspeople,and National Park Service staff as members of the project teams.

Field project sites includeFrijoles Canyon Cavates at Bandelier National Monument and the 17th Century Quarai Spanish Mission Church, Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument, Mountainair, NM.

Scopeof Work
The Outreach Assistant I willsupport the Department of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico onconservation field projects. Duties may include:
participating in fieldwork:
documenting (drawing and photography) of architecture, landscapes and other site features
assisting PI and project consultants in data collection
assisting with research by collecting primary and secondary source data from the park and local archives related to the sites; and
preparing graphic and written products related to the activities undertaken.

Fieldwork will take place at BandelierNational Monument in New Mexico. Materials analysis will take place at the UNM Maincampus, and; archival research, artwork, data processing and report preparationwill be done remotely. Fieldwork at Bandelier National Monument will take placefor a week in June and a week in July, with research, data analysis, graphicdocumentation preparation, and reporting taking place both before and after thefieldwork sessions Student participation will average 10-20 hours per week. Expensesfor transportation to/from the field sites during field campaigns will bereimbursed. Fieldwork at Bandelier National Monuments will be daily travelto/from Albuquerque. There will be a per diem for fieldwork that involvesovernight stays.

Up to two student researchassistants will be hired @ $15/hr. The assistant must provide their own laptopcomputer/tablet. Preference will be given to students with experience in fineart, architectural/archaeological sites documentation (surveying, mapping,drawing), archival research, materials analysis, and proficiency with the Adobesuite Excel, Adobe Illustrator/InDesign and Photoshop software(s).
